It's a bit of a nightmare tbh.
(FWP)
I want to keep the thin finish and low key paint.
There aren't too many places that can do the box lining. Bob Jackson can but they told me;'We cannot and will not try to make the paint work look old and thin. This will be a high gloss finish to a high standard, Why would you not want it looking good?? If you want it looking older with thin clear coat etc keep it as it is.'
So after finding £250 to get it painted
😬😖 I'm going to build it up and ride it on dry days wearing a wool jersey with front pockets.I've been collecting parts for it since before they were worth stupid money. I'm actually unsure how cool it is to use that front derailleur (not because it's worth crazy dolly but because there aren't many surviving)

Have you tried Colourtech Crayford, would probably say the same as Bob Jackson to be fair but he may have some ideas on what you could do.
Get it built up and ready for the next pre 50's ride. -
• #830
Colourtech don't do box lining unfortunately.
They resprayed my Cougar a few years back - pearl white and did a great job.Seems only Bob Jackson, Argos and Atlantic Boulevard do proper hand box lining.
I'd be happy to find someone else. I know a thinner finish can be done - but I need to find someone who 'gets it'.
If I can convince BJ to do a thin clear coat they'd be first choice, they do a lot of Jack Taylors and they're nearly £100 cheaper than Argos! -

These are the wheels.
Harden gear sided on Conloy Asps.
I'm getting excited about finally finishing this project.
When's this pre 50's ride? (This is actually a '52 😬)

ooh, lovely wheelset that. Very jealous. What's the Issue with Bob Jackson finishing? Simply that the clear coat is too thick to show off the lugs?-I only ask as I was planning to try them for my Carlton Flyer repaint/re-chrome . It has simpler lugs but I still don't want really thick clearcoat if possible....

Thanks. The wheels are lush. The Harden hubs are a thing of beauty.
You should see the derailleurs though!!!
I've been collecting parts for this bike for years (since before L'Eroica was a thing). I couldn't afford them now - they've got so desired/expensive. -

I asked BJs if they could do a thinner look paint with less top coat, expecting them to say 'yeah sure people often ask for that' instead I got the snarky reply I pasted above.
The issue is finding someone who does box lining and does it often enough that it has a casual flow to it. -
• #835
Yup, Know what you mean about box lining. Seems only Argos really do it well from researching it on the internet., but they are super-spendy. Was going to go for box lining on mine but decided really can't afford it so will need s cheaper finish. What derailleur are you going to use?

The frame was built for a cable operated front derailleur controlled from the right side (double pulley wheel on top of BB shell, Simplex braze-on for shifter on DT). This was pretty high tech in '52 and racers stuck with rod op front derailleurs for a while so there arent many around.
Frame also has a rear Simplex hanger so after some research I realised I needed a Juy 51, a Juy 53 (unobtainable) and a Simplex double shifter.

Does it all have to be done at the same place? I would have thought you could get the frame sprayed separately and then get the box lining added later.
Are you intending to get the whole frame reprayed? -
• #838
Jackson's sent me a pic of some box lining they'd done and it looked good, they respray a lot of Jack Taylor's apparently.
Argos's box lining is only £25 more than BJs but all the other bits add up, single colour paint is £155! and they charge £35 for putting on decals.I'm sure their work is beautiful but I actually want it to look a bit less posh.

Yeah. I'd wondered about getting different places to paint and line it.
Dunno. -
• #840
The problem with having the lining done elsewhere is that it would either be on top of the final lacquer coat and at risk of getting worn or damaged, or you would need to get lining and lacquering done by the second supplier which would be extra cost.

I know exactly where your coming from, because I have asked the same questions but the sprayer cannot replicate 60 odd years of ware and tear. Once the frame has been sprayed, lined and laquaered it will look superb and it means you can take it out and ride it without having to worry.

Yeah. I don't want wear and tear or 'patina' (gah) I'm not interested in fakery, I just don't want syrupy thick clear coat pooling around those crisp lugs.
Modern paint is shit though, I think the thick clear coat is to hold it on.
Enough prevarication, I need to get it done.
I was hoping for a recommendation for another possible painter but it sounds as though it's still Argos or BJs are Atlantic Boulevard still a thing? -

There is also Ellis Briggs although I haven't used them. I'm doing similar research to you.
-
• #844
Ah, cool. I'd forgotten about Ellis Briggs, what's their reputation?
Should I move this discussion to current projects? I haven't been on LFGSS for years - dunno the etiquette. -

Wash your mouth out! (jokes)
I've seen lovely work from Argos. If I had something that required a respray, I'd certainly use them. Far from cheap though. Looking forward to seeing this come together. -
• #846
I should have put wear and tear in apostrophes- I love a bit of wabi sabi with my beasuage, just not when it's faked.
Yeah, it's steering back towards Argos I think.
Looks like I'll need to sell my NOS Mavic SSC no. 4 Cr.D rims to fund it (sobs) -
