Sturmey hubs are not completely impractical for time trialling.
Here's my attempt to use one. I didn't really set out to prove the value of hub gears, but I had a frame I wanted to use which wasn't really suitable for fixed. I found I was getting results as good or better than I'd been getting on my conventional semi - modern geared bike, so I had this wheel built with a Fiamme sprint rim and bladed spokes. The hub is an AM, that is, a 3 speed medium ratio.
With the 15 sprocket as shown and a 51 tooth ring this gave gears of 79,90 and 104" - the equivalent of a block with 13,15 and 17 tooth sprockets. I found this suited me for flattish courses like the F1 (The A1 road based on Tempsford near Sandy, Beds.)
Other (much more illustrious) Sturmey users have been Sid Ferris, Ray Booty (his straight out RRA 100 record) and Cliff Smith (24 Hour Champ. 1964), among many others.

Of course, it goes without saying, it's no job finished at all.
I'll find something to put underneath the spindle and hammer a bit and tighten the nuts, hammer, tighten to get a snug enough fit.

Sometimes they are filed down a lot if bought pre-filed. A lot depends on the particular crank/bottom bracket spindle combination I think

What you've done looks fine. I recommend checking for tightness after you've ridden a few miles - things do sometimes settle down a bit.

Went to the Sheffield bike jumble (just made it before packing up) and bought a chain set labelled 3/32 for £20.
It’s fuckimg 1/8th I now discover.

Possibly another job for the vice.
Failing that you could probably just unscrew the cup - once you've moved that out a bit the lock ring should be finger tight.
Then replace that lock ring with another for which you have got a tool.
The only alternative is to spend money!

I'm still intending to go, but I'm going to be away next week and off the internet until Saturday (1st June).
I wonder whether some one else would like to post it in the Rides and Races column?
I'd rather some else did it because then we'd have at least two people committed to going.
So, the basic plot is: Meet Cafe Nero 9.30 for 9.45 start, no modern bikes, ride about 50 miles with some climbing and a cafe stop.
My riding has been very limited in the past couple of weeks, so I don't expect to be 'pinging'.
dropout replacement is a feasible theory.
As far as I know, Stallard frame numbers are on the non-drive side dropout & headtube
