• What on earth is that? Some strange Auminium construction?

  • Yes, pretty amazing for the 30s, made in Paris.

  • Went for £2.3k in the end.
    Super nice

  • Blimey, good price and what a bike.

  • What chain oil would anyone recommend for a 50s bike?

Is there a modern equivalent of what would have been used at the time which would be best suited for the
    components?

Or is it best just to use something modern.

    Thanks

  • Engine oil is fine but it’s a bit smelly. Castrol R 40 is what you want if you want it to smell like it lives on a vintage race circuit like Goodwood, Brooklands etc.

Any modern bike oil is also fine and a lot less smelly!

  • 1950s chain?
If it's been good for 70 years then your choice of oil is unlikely to do much harm.
I use a Castrol ATF applied with a (suitably vintage) Valvespout oiler on my 1952 Phillips - having said that, the chain is relatively new, replaced when I restored it some years ago.

  • I have a metric shedload of 50's bits going up for sale in about 3 weeks, as I need to clear out dads garage if anyone is interested.

    There's
    Airlite
    Constrictor
    CLB
A nice Holdsworth Cyclone Deluxe fixed track/path, missing the head badge unfortunately.
    Mercian super Vigorelli track/path frame
    Claud Butler Something or other.

    All sorts of stuff.

  • Constrictor

Talk to me, have you got any Constrictor tubular rims?!?

  • No, they're beaded with airlite hubs on the Holdsworth.

Got a nice Constrictor lamp bracket and some BOA pedals which are rusty, but I've seen some pedal reforms on Classic Lightweights website which came out fine and dandy, so they could be saved.

  • CLb Alp brakes by any chance? Either callipers or levers or both?

  • Yep, pretty sure I have a complete set of those.

  • Any Regina blocks or chains?

  • If you do, I'm interested. PM some photos and how much you looking for for the, if that's alright.

  • Interested in that cyclone. What year is it. Sorry not to buy, just interest as I have a 1933-36 Cyclone.

But what's on it might be of interest :)

  • @anidel

Er....I'd rather get shot of the bike complete to be honest, as I'll end up with frames hanging around if I start to split it. Not sure what age it is, but Ill try to find out when I get there.

    @jeff80

I'll contact you when I get there.

I'll make a list of all the stuff there is and post it here. I guess I should really list it all on the for sale thread, so I'll post a link to that too instead of cluttering up this thread.

I've got a brand new Chater Lea BB too, no bearings but spindle and cups. Never seen a bike.

  • Also interested in what you have for sale.

  • The CL BB is of interested. Do let me know price. Thanks!

    Got CL pedals too?

  • No CL pedals, unfortunately.

There's a 6 day track frame with Chater Lea lugs in need of a home.

  • Managed to find a Simplex TDF derailleur in bits for a few pounds which I think is complete.
I thought that it would be very handy for spares.

  • I bought as spares for a 5 speed derailleur, One issue is that the cage shows that this is a 4 speed derailleur.
Does anyone know whether I can make this into a 5 speed and which part I would need to change to adapt it to 5 speed?

    Thanks

  • I’m posting in here as I guess the bikes being discussed might often feature cottered cranks?

I have a rather nice set of cottered cranks, Stronglights I think. Thinking about using them on my klunker mtb but not really sure where to start in getting a bottom bracket for them. Like, how are cottered pin bbs even measured? Looking on eBay quickly it looks like a lot of the spindles on offer are asymmetrical would that be correct?

It looks like I’ll need to buy a spindle and then cups and bearings separately, are there decent quality bottom brackets available? Might be best to buy an vintage B.B. and replace the bearings and stuff I guess as new cups on eBay look pretty cheap n nasty.

  • Fair enough :)

  • I'll keep you posted about the BB.
