  • Found a Gazelle Cross Trophy through a local sales website. It wasn't in a good condition but it doesn't have any dents and it was cheap.

Will go for the SSCX way. Stripped the whole bike and what I kept were:

    • Frameset, Gazelle Cross trophy from around 1986.
    • Wheels, unmatching pair, quite light for their age.
    • TA cx chainset 44t with double bashguard.

Ordered some fluor yellow and green outer cables (found them crazy cheap over here: http://www.cable-shop.nl/index1.html (dutch website).

Went through my own partsbox to find:

    • Shimano 600 aero levers
    • Bontrager 'spotter' ssr vr-c bars (had bought them for a project which didn't take off properly).

    Then through the shops warehouse:

    • Continental 35c tyres which fitted only just
    • New inner cables
    • Brake shoes
    • Chain
    • Freewheel
    • Bartape
    • Some second hand SPD pedals

So there are some small problems:

    • Have to regrease the BB
    • Little play on the BB
    • Have to run through (don't know the word) the seatpost before I'll fit the post
    • Lost a special part that is needed for the front canti, so I'll have to find a solution for that.

    Tips and hints are welcome!

  • Yeah thanks, really love the look of that. That was also the reason for me to go with 35c instead of 30c.

    I'm having this problem:

Part is broken... If anyone has one set of Weinmann canti's (or a set of cheap canti's) pls. pm me!

  • jan, thanks for the link to the shop; i reckon im gonna use the lairy fluro for my airplane project!

  • No problem, they're really cheap and uptill now I can't say anything bad about them. Don't know if they're any good for gearcables.

  • i wasnt planning on using them for the gears. they only have spiralled ones dont they?

  • Yes, and they've got teflon inside, so they're not bad.

  • Update,

Couldn't testride it today because of the bad weather, but will do this week.

    Wut?

  • pouring rain and a lot of wind ;)

  • Otherwise known as proper cyclocross weather.

Time for a dose of HTFU.

  • Good choice in headset, I just bought one for my road build.

  • Yeah, I'll hope it is, they seem like good price/quality. Have you already got it?

  • I doubt if modern brakes will work on this, i had similiar cross trophy and brakes was pain in the ass, old ones have 55mm between the brake bosses and moderns have 80mm so there might be problem to fit those new brakes.

  • How's that? You can almost completely adjust them, there are spacers on the blocks and you can adjust the brakes a lot, don't think there will be a problem cause in that case the same problem would be there with fitting modern canti's on these kind of frames.

Yes canti's have same problem, atleast me and few other guys who have built vintage crossers, modern canti's you can mod with bendig the spirng, i don't know if it works with v-brakes.

  • I've never had any problems setting up Canti's or V-brakes, and I've done quite some. So I don't think this will give me any problems, but we'll see!

  • Here is more discussion about the problem i had: http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-620265.html

  • From experience you'll definitely need to go with a thinner tyre, as I bought a frame from Holland via ebay, then got local bike shop to build up and had to swap the 35mm rear tyre off as it rubs against the chain stay. I think 33 or even 32 is max you want to go for.

  • ….ref the brakes dialogue you'll need some old skool mafac or weinmann, as the modern brakes won't work. I looked at these options and they don't fit.

  • i used modern canti's on my vintage Orrell crosser but had to use ThinStop pads which are, as the name suggests, much slimmer and allow you to adjust them properly. Also very good at stopping.

  • Thanks guys, from my own experiences the 35c's work fine ;). If they rub against the chainstay you've got to true the wheels and put on the tyres properly.

I haven't got the brakes yet, but I'm not that concerned about them working, cause I think they will. They will fit pimpmybike, cause their mounts are the same as more modern frames.

  • The mounts on mine were the same as more modern ones also, and I was using frogglegs, it was a distance thing between the mounts that was the problem-slamming the pads all the way back into them meant that I couldn't get decent contact or toe-in properly. Hence having the choice of different brakes or slim-profile pads.

Hope yours will work out though, looks like a really fun ride.

  • Yeah, I hope I wont find a lot of problems besides the bloody cranks hehe.

Will probably put some 28c roadtyres on this though, cause there isn't a lot of cross in my part of the Netherlands.
