  • A little slow. I have been distracted with a couple of other builds...... I guess i have to bite the bullet and send it off to get the work done....It really needs some love thrown at it.

  • Good luck with that ... looking fwd to seeing the finished bike.

    I'm very jealous ;)

  • .

  • those handlebars are mental.. only for urang utans!

  • Stil slow?

  • Sorry Luckyskull for Hijacking your thread, but it seemed to make more sense to use this one rather than opening another A.S. Gillott thread.
So this arrived today a 1951 A.S. Gillott Track/Path frame ripe for restoration.

My first Gillott. Spearpoint lugs, a good start?

Track ends, the frame No. is stamped on both drop outs but is difficult to read as the paint work is atrocious.

RGB Fork crown, the writing here and on the down tube looks as if it has been added recently, it has certainly been repainted.

    Im very pleased with this..

Im hoping this will polish up nicely. Gnutti headset, or whats left of it.

The frame No. is a little clearer on this side

Its nice to get confirmation of the frame No. on the fork steerer.

    Sorry about the ridiculous photograph.
I was thinking to give it a T-Cut and polish and get it out on the road.

  • I was thinking to give it a T-Cut and polish and get it out on the road

Good man - that's the spirit.
    Stunning frame too

  • Stunning frame

    +1

  • Thanks guys.
Though it was stunning, I should have put this post in the WTF thread..!

I couldnt get the right hand BB cone out so heated up the bottom bracket and have inadvertently managed to ovalise one side of the BB shell. I cut the cone in two while in the shell and squeezed it hoping it would come away from the shell but for some reason squeezing the cone pulled the shell in with it.
    What a dick...!
I havent got a photo as i left the frame with Colourtech, he said he would have to wait for his frame builder to let me know if it can be repaired.

  • The frame is back from Colourtech and all seems to be alright thank goodness. They re-shaped and re-tapped the BB and it runs smoothly. I will need to get the remains of the oiler out of the socket at some point and it will definately need painting now, but today I took it out on a trial run. Note the Bracket shell is RGF. French, -Raccord Gargette Freres. The Williams chainset that came with the frame was dated 1956, so couldnt be original to the frame, so I have upgraded to a CL chainset that i had to hand.

I have added a front brake since this picture was taken.

The rims are Constrictor, Im sure, though I cannot see any markings on the hubs, I thought they may be small flange Airlite? The Gnutti headset turns out to be a mixture of Gnutti and Brampton.

  • Oh that's so nice! Shame you've got to repaint it

  • The fork crown looks even nicer now than in the previous picture

  • Stunning...
I'll sleep better now in the knowledge you've not fucked it!
    Nice one

  • I agree, i dont want to paint it either but what are my options, with bare metal on the BB and superficial corrosion on the rest of the frame.?

  • No, of course you've got to repaint. But it's a shame nonetheless

  • That's just gorgeous, maybe just lacquer it rather than a repaint?

  • ^ Good point
worked for me on my bob jackson

  • ^ Boast post, and justified.

  • ^^ That you are selling to me for cheap right?

  • There is no way the Gillott would ever look that good with just a lacquer, so i have gone the whole hog and resprayed the frame and its finally back from the paint shop.

I was hoping for a 1950's colour scheme..!

The drilled brake bridge is definetly an after market job.

Gold lug lining around the RGF BB

The frame may be all shiny, but the components will be just cleaned up and replaced. I specified a satin finish to the lacquer, not sure if that has made much of a difference to the shiny-ness.

Crisp out line to the frame No.

Transfers in the right place courtesy of Mark Stevens brilliant Flickr site.

  • Decent.

  • Get that thick paintjob ratty again please, so we can admire it once more!

  • Very respectful.

  • Not to worry, a couple of months of commuting up and down The Old Kent Road will soon sort that out.
