I'll be coming down from Cambridge in the morning too, so I guess I'll see Hefty, Tias, and Separ ation at the station too. I'll be on a red steel jobby with chrome mudguards, geared.

It is indeed looking like a fairly big crowd, and I'll be giving some thought to how we manage the issues that flow from that. Splitting it into two rides seems a bit drastic, but we will encounter splits at traffic lights and will need to have good communications across the group.

I was wondering if any 'split' is going to take place it would make more sense after High Beech when the fixielords can safely power off on their own without too many traffic light considerations.
It might happen naturally after that point anyway, but as there's a natural pause there then it might be a good opportunity to collect any straggling groups, check up on strays, or meet up with latecomers.
I've no doubt I'll be in the tail group no matter what happens mind
-
• #230
Yes, High Beech would be a more obvious point to split if we have to. Apart from village pelicans the only other traffic light I can think of before Cambridge is where we cross the A120 Stortford Road.

Just ask everyone to stop on orange (if safe) and not to filter.

Indeed. While respecting the spirit of freedom and anarchy, I had started pulling together some middle-aged notes a few weeks ago which go something like:
stops – High Beech, Much Hadham, Cambridge
Red lights - we will stop at them
Aim to stick together
I ought to provide my mobile number – anyone who drops off the back (mechanical or other reason) is welcome to call me so we can pause while you catch up, or send someone back if need be
Volunteers to act as sweeper are welcome. Be aware of riders behind you - if you lose sight of them, slow down or pull in to regroup. Call ahead to let other riders know you’re stopping
It’s best if we don’t filter past stationary traffic – pull up behind traffic in a queue at lights
Look out for drivers who want to overtake, and be ready to speak with them; they may not know that there’s a long line of cyclists ahead.

I'm thinking of catching the train into Paddington and riding to Brick Lane - could do with some company/navigational help if anyone else is leaving from Paddington way?
If your there in early in the morning, then just ride towards east on Euston road and city road heading to old street roundabout and the rest should be easy.
-
• #234
Ludd, beware of trying to direct traffic! BMMF once pointed this out to me in a discussion on overtakers in that london's famous tnrc thread. Sage advice. But yes your points about communication, red lights, filtering - absolutely.
-
• #235
Too right, Skully.
I'm not qualified to do that and would not want to be responsible for any twattery that could be pinned on my instructions, but I am happy to provide an explanation to any driver who appears baffled as to why the rider at the back of the group is not waving them through.
Are you in?

See you on the platform. Depending on how fit I feel I'll either be on a purple Bianchi SS or a geared black Vitus.
If Vitus I will fit 4spok so I at least look a bit slave.

^^It's a pleasure.
I'll be heading up from SE London but will probbably use the ginger line, as it's pretty much door to door for me.
If we really are going to have 40+ riders turning out for this, I'd suggest we gather by the polo court on the north side of BGRoad. That way we don't clog up a busy section of brick lane.

I'll be ginger lining it from SE as well - figured I might as well give myself the maximum bagel window

Good stuff - was thinking to get in to Paddington Station at 8am, can do earlier if you think we need more than an hour to get to Brick Lane?
It is indeed looking like a fairly big crowd, and I'll be giving some thought to how we manage the issues that flow from that. Splitting it into two rides seems a bit drastic, but we will encounter splits at traffic lights and will need to have good communications across the group.
