you remove the QR from the axle. one side of the axle should face upward/to you, the hub-bearing covers are removed so that you can see your red rubber bearing covers. now hold the hubshell firmly in one hand and hit the axle with a mallet. you should see the opposite bearing coming out of the hubshell with each hit. repeat until axle with bearing falls out. remove bearing from axle, re-insert the axle in hub, remove other side bearing.

I've tried that and nothing is happening. Like, it's not budging and I'm twatting fuck out of the axle with a mallet.

Are you holding the wheel or is it resting on something? If the latter, make sure the axle and bearing aren’t resting on anything, only the hub shell. Also check you’ve removed all the bits from the axle side you’re hitting.
If still no dice, add wd40 or a penetrating oil to the bearings, let sit, then hit.

I've done both - holding and resting it on something that isn't covering the bearing/axle. It's not even close to moving and I'm hitting it with more force than I'm comfortable with. Might have to try the WD40 route.

You're assuming a home mechanic has one? ;)
Your comment read like you were telling me to use it and thank you later, I've got a hammer, I'd probably just use a bit of wood and hammer that if not although the sacrifial QR might be a decent shout assuming you've got an old QR lying around and it's softer than alu. ;)

Harder! Try the other side too.

OK, that did it. Took out one of the bearings too. Removing the other bearing is just a case of hitting it from the other side with the end of a screwdriver, right?
E2a: sorted. New bearings on the way too. I'm guessing putting the new ones in is just as much of a faff, only in reverse, yeah?

Hit the QR. Possibly the bearings outer race is gunked or rusted hence pretty stucked to the hub shell.
-

Hitting the bearing out is usually the idea, you can just use the axle again and hit it with some meaning.

Heating the hub shell a bit with a heatgun or small blowtorch not only really helps get bearings in/out, it's also incredibly fun to point fire at stuff

It was highly gunked/rusted.

Anyone else seeing SPD-SL pedal wear like this? One of my customers and he has worn through 3 pairs of pd-r8000 in 3.5 years.
Cleats are good. Shoes are also fine (fizik). A bit stumped.

Hi all, I recently bought a broken frame bike to cannibalise for a project bike. The rear wheel has a fixed gear on one side and this on the other. Ideally I'd put a freewheel on but can't work out what this is? Any thoughts would be welcome! Thanks!

Is it a broken freewheel? Like the cog has snapped off
Edit: that square at the top looks like where a pawl would sit

Ahhh, that's a good shout. Hopefully, then me/my LBS can just pull it off (unless something truly catastrophic happened)

It will need unscrewing from the hub, but a standard single-speed removal tool should fit it. Just hope that the thread was greased when it was fitted.

Brilliant, thanks! Fingers crossed!

Here you go.

Absolute filth... ;)

Not seen that before but that's well shit, why on earth does he keep.buying the same peddles over and over again if that keeps happening??

Right, the new bearings have arrived. From what I can see on 'How to' guides, I need to grease the outside of the bearings and the hub, insert one of the bearings, press it in as best I can then (as I don't have a bearings press) hammer the bearing into place using the old bearing as a guide.
That right? Then repeat the process on the other side, insert the axle, replace the caps and try and re-insert the snap rings (not looking forward to that).

It is good, but I have no threads on this axle, so can't follow it to the letter.
I like the sound of this - attempts to dislodge the axle using the 'hub shell resting on something' technique have proven fruitless so far. What do I hit? The QR?
