A 26-year-old who is being taken to court for knocking down a cyclist and who cannot be named for legal reasons, said it was wrong to penalise those who kill or injure a cyclist in what could be seen as unfortunate accidents.

"I don't think it's fair because I wasn't driving dangerously, I wasn't driving erratically," he said. "I just failed to see someone who was on the road."

these cases shouldn't be jury trials - recent events would suggest that anyone with a driving license can't be reasonably expected to be impartial. fucking woeful.

I've looked on Google Streetview, the memorial is visible and there is a pavement there. That excuses nothing though.

Daniel's bike was brand new, he was a triathlete. I think it's unlikely he'd ride on that narrow strip covered in grass.

I think that it is often forgotten that there is a legitimate and important retribution aspect to justice. It is not just about deterrence of others and preventing re-offending ("I'm really sorry guv, won't do it again, look how good I've been up until now, hardly killed anybody")
