This isn't actually the case, I think. From when I've needed it for work, as long as non-CRB staff are supervised at all times by a CRB'd staff member it is okay. Not sure how far you could push the ratio, but we've certainly done 1:1 fine
Interesting. My experience is based on my old Scout group where any leader/helper/whatever who goes on camp must be CRB checked (even if it's a parent of one of the children camping). That might just be a policy of the Scouts though, so might be different. You're also never allowed to be alone with a single child. Two adults and one child is fine, and vice versa.Maybe in this situation it's different because you're in loco parentis, whereas if it's a one off event then it can be assumed the child would have the protection of their parents before/after the race/track session/whatever? I know not. Just don't want to see anyone getting accused of being a nonce just because they're running a super-awesome open-to-everybody cycle event.
I'd want to make sure everything is above board.

Yeah, I haven't checked that stock yet... will check this weekend.

I'd want to make sure everything is above board.
It's bureaucracy, it's invasive, it's a burden on anyone who might want to organise an event.
Think of the children? Fuck the children*.
This is a cycle club for adults, enabling adults to have a laugh, to expand the number of adults who try out and use cycle facilities, participate in sport, etc... it's not overly organised, it's not going to be some sprawling administrative body... it's just an umbrella under which a bunch of adults, who talk shit on the internet, can come together and appear fairly organised and official, and kick open a whole load of doors so that we get access to things that a bunch of adults, who talk shit on the internet, might not get access to.
This forum has always been adult only, and there are literally 2 or 3 people who are likely to be under 18, above 16, on the forum, and interested in joining this club.
For the sake of those 2 or 3, I'm not going to suddenly muddy the water, and require everyone who wants to organise an event to divulge their past to me or anyone else. I'm not going to require them to go through invasive jumps, just so that they can go "Hey, wouldn't it be a blast if we did event x". They should be able to do that without the burden of CRB and "think of the children".
There's a line to be drawn, and when we suddenly require welfare officers, "think of the children", CRB checks, record management, ratios of CRB checked people at events... then it's way outside the remit of the club.
Of course this sucks majorly, of course I'd prefer to say all are welcome. But it's the world we live in and this forum has never been "think of the children" and the club won't be either. Our conversations are adult, our socialising is adult (pubs!), we are adults. Let's just get on with having a blast as adults.
To anyone below 18, please join a club that can safeguard and protect you. If you still want to join us when you're 18, you are very welcome to do so. And regarding events, the vast majority of forum events are not club organised events, they are just public gatherings... nothing is stopping you from doing them.
As for club events, the only open question is: What happens if someone from VCL who is 17 turns up to Herne Hill and wants to ride with us? We've never turned anyone away, but would we suddenly have all of the burden above? If the answer is yes then it may well be that we can't let under 18s participate in those events. The burden on the club is too great, we are disorganised and post-formation will be decentralised... we can't expect anyone who organises or volunteers at an event to go through CRB for 1 or 2 people, and we won't.
- Not literally, there are laws against that.
- Not literally, there are laws against that.

Does it really?
Actually it's a political rant at the stupidity of a society that thinks invading privacy is a way to protect children.

Scoutmasters have form, and there is overnight accommodation. I think when we do Go Ride sessions we only need the leader to be CRBed
-
• #561
Right, but as mentioned before- there are a lot of DBS'd (new name for CRB) members.
Surely it would be equally simple to make sure of the availability of one of these members before a big club event (velodrome usage etc), and if none are available, then it can't be open for under 18s...

As stated elsewhere the checks relate to an organisation, and require a welfare officer for the organisation, acceptance of things like the BC "safeguarding children" stuff, etc.
I don't believe it's as simple as just saying "Frank, over there, is background checked... so we thought it'd be fine.".
Bureaucracy, by it's nature, is bureaucratic.

They were supposed to be increasing transferability recently.
I'd be perfectly happy to do the welfare role- if it makes it easier and more accessible.
-
• #569
CRB/DBS checks are currently non-transferable between workplaces. At the moment I have two for different places, even if you transfer department in the same workplace a new check has to be carried out. There has been talk of making them transferable in the future, but it will probably be a long time off.
Looking forward to a "plain" jersey...even if it makes me boring that I don't want shark pits/unicorns etc.

And not in that sense.

I'm not bickering at all- since it's Velocio's club- he can do what he likes as in the end he is responsible.
I was merely saying that if he wanted help/ though that it was too much hassle to include minors as members- then I'm sure that there are other people, myself included, who would be happy enough to share the burden of responsibility.I don't really care that much in the end.
I like the jersey much more than the sharkpits, and its a great move.
It must be nearly the biggest club by now, no? -
• #575
I'm sure that there are other people, myself included, who would be happy enough to share the burden of responsibility.
The problem is, I believe, that it's a collective responsibility. Event organisers, volunteers, anyone perceived to be working an event, helping out or in any position of respect/authority in an event would need the background checks, etc.
No few people can say that they will take the burden, the burden either exists for everyone who ever helps out or does not exist at all. It's pretty black and white. I wish it were not, but there you have it... it reads that way, and I'll be going through the paperwork and associated web of background information on Sunday looking for exceptions, but it really does appear to be all or nothing, children welcome or not welcome.
Given the way that events are organised - ad-hoc, by an ever-changing sea of volunteers - that all or nothing, black and white approach, really doesn't work.
It's already hard to inspire people to organise rides, events, and get stuff done. I'll take no decision that makes that harder, or creates obstructions to stuff happening.
I want people to operate largely without a rule book, to make things up as they go along, to try new stuff out, and to enjoy it.
If, to achieve that, we have to say: No under 18s. Then so be it.
The audience for this club is 99% adult. So no burdens, no obstacles, let's have a lot of fun, do a lot of stupid stuff, and enjoy it.
