I'd rather not have any filtering to begin with, thanks ISPs.

Not even to highlight midget related content?

They need a filter on the In Bruges DVD then

This feels especially relevant in light of all the censorship talk at the moment
It’s all well and good to say that the more things change the more things stay the same, and for questions of human nature I’m in total agreement with that sentiment. But the fact is also that the tools invented by the human animal can create permanent and structural change in human society. The Internet is one such tool – maybe not on a par with the taming of fire but certainly on the top 10 list – as it has transformed every aspect of communication. Why is this important? For social animals like ants, termites, and humans communication is everything. For better and worse, we are biologically and culturally evolved to respond to signals from other humans, and a tool that makes it possible for any one of us to signal every one of us is … breathtaking in its power. This is the singular thing that gives me any hope at all that **the bloodless coup we have suffered in the form of NSA Omniscience and Central Bank Omnipotence can be reversed. **There are independent and honest voices out there today, and there will be more voices tomorrow. Is there a lot of dreck floating around, a thousand comment cesspools for every David Rosenberg? Sure. But my faith as a small-l liberal is that so long as the voices can be heard, the competition of ideas and opinions will push the most useful of those voices to a place where everyone can hear them. And that’s how the pernicious dynamic of the Emperor’s New Clothes is broken … by an honest voice that’s heard above the crowd. The Internet makes that possible.

It's a sly, scaremongering, anti-societal thing to do. Exactly what you'd expect from the most right wing administration this side of the war.
They're clearly worried that by using forums we might educate and inform one another, and that by exercising a Project Fear, we'll just stop. It's a vote loser, only a vehement protest now will have any impact.
You know what to do.
Try telling that to the thickos of the UK.

I've a vague notion that I had to go through an O2 "I'm over 18, give me the unrestricted internet" when I got my iPhone 4S ages ago - maybe even when I got the 3G before that. Even though I was pay monthly the existence of that contract was insufficient to prove my age. I think it was to protect them from being sued by parents of kids on PAYG phones browsing for porn.
Therefore I don't think this list is entirely new, and I'm not so sure it's related to the government thing.

Same as Bluequinn. I opted out of parental controls on O2 years ago and am not seeing lfgss being blocked.
-
• #384
I haven't opted out of the over 18 on giffgaff and I still get lfgss....
-
• #385
So if I want to access LFGSS I need to be on the Perv list... ?

"Cleanfeed" the original kiddie porn filtering system has already been manipulated by private interests:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleanfeed_%28content_blocking_system%29#United_Kingdom
"In June 2011 the Motion Picture Association began court proceedings in an attempt to force BT to use Cleanfeed to block access to NewzBin2, a site indexing downloads of copyrighted content."

It's a running trend - the corporates want the internet back. So no more file sharing, no more link posting, no more downloading stuff for free. Oh, and total surveillance and tracking of your every thought and action please.
And pretty much f@ck everybody else. This isn't about security or web porn or free speech - it's pure commerce in full throttle. They want to re- monetize the internet and as soon as.
Plain as the nose on the end of it. Your MP will do fuckall, because they have every lobbyist doling out the gratuities. It's game over for free for all uncensored internet. My ISP has blocked 21 file sharing sites in the last month.

I just can't see people accepting this when it starts getting implemented on existing customers. Especially if popular websites are blocked.

The O2 link doesn't work anymore. Is there somewhere else I can check the status of domains I look after?

You mean like 2500+ movie file sharing sites? This is a first wave roll out of the corporates to re monetize the internet and curb dissent. I would only expect it to get worse, not any better. 'Popular ' by their definition means 'free', or pirated. This is just another step forward in the role of commerce and a willing administration to shut down non paid for distribution of media and uncensored comment.
Coming to every digital community near you soon. Look at the Snowden revelations - hardly a murmur from the BBC. And the politicians are just as guilty, doped up stupid byadvisers and professional lobbyists.

Get a payg O2 sim, put a teeny bit of credit on it and don't remove the under 18 block?

You mean like 2500+ movie file sharing sites? This is a ...
I mean if it encompasses websites with comments sections, forums, and other such completely legal and innocent websites used by the majority of the population then it simply won't work.
