  • Someone on the Chiltern Grit, outside the bakery at the first control, had that setup.

  • That was my bike - I copied the idea from the McCraw site. I managed to break my mount the night before the Chiltern Grit and had to make another one quickly from pound shop tupperware. Easy to do though, and stable on the bike.

    Reflector mount kindly provided free by Cyclesurgery Great Portland Street. Any bike shop will have a box of these of various sizes.

    It won't work for longer audaxes when I'll be using my Carradice saddlebag, so I'll have to figure out an alternative for that.

  • @Nim that was me asking you about your setup outside the bakery. Must get into a shop this weekend and find a suitable bracket.

  • Run into a bit of a problem... I've got the Plug III and I've realised I can't use it with my carbon forks as there's no hole at the bottom of the stearer.

    At the moment I've thought of four solutions:

    1) Drill the carbon

    2) New forks

    3) Just attach the plug to my handlebars

    4) Return it and get a sinewave.

    Any suggestions?

  • I like the idea of mounting it elsewhere. Ed Pickup did that for TransAm.
    Allows you to seal the bottom of it better too.

  • I bought one, delivery tooks something like 2 weeks from door to door. Althought it's not waterproof, i put mine in ziplock inside my top tube Revelate, that's perfect.

  • So is it a case of stripping the hub out of the wheel and sending back to the factory? Do you think anything else would have faired much better and would it have been worth it (I only ask as I'm about to buy the same hub) How many miles do you think you got out of that?

    edit: realised that post was months old. What happened in the end, how long did it take to get back?

  • Stripped it out and LBS returned it to Ison who exchanged for a reconditioned hub (and I assume sent mine back to Germany to be reconditioned and then used as a replacement for someone else...). I was getting the wheel rebuilt anyway so no big hassle really, there was a bit of a delay as it was sent back just before Christmas and both ISON and LBS were shut for a bit and were waiting for reconditioned hubs to arrive back from Germany with the right drilling etc. all explained up front, probably would have been sorted within a week had it been any other time of the year.

    Doing a bit more thinking, I'd forgotten (deliberately?) about a particularly grim stretch of bridleway in Wales where I must have submerged the hub (remember draining shit of of the BB) and another river crossing at 4am which was thigh deep - both times must have seen the hub underwater. The hub was on my 29er and it looks like I recorded 2000km on it (mainly in the Peaks, nice and gritty...) + ???km of regular evening rides at the two local trails for ~18 months, hard to say in total...

    I have another SP hub on the road/cross bike - that's done 4000km of "rides" and around 2 years of commuting/errands and is still super smooth.

  • Nice one, that sounds like a decent innings. I would have thought I dunking would fuck up a more expensive hub anyway.

    I went for using the rack mounts rather than anything on the seatpost, so it's a little more permanent feeling. I'd like to neaten it up but for now it's just fine

  • Note to self: don't do your normal tactic of "fuck it!" river crossings with dynamo fitted...

  • @alialias you should really work on your wiring setup. Your dynamo wires are in a mess. With half an hour it'll be fixed - that's free and you will save money by extending lifetime of those. :)

  • I think that's saying that you can't run the dynamo lights off the 5VDC output from the D1. If you look in the manual it says

    Where you are running dynamo lights, you can 'piggyback' off your
    current wiring, but don't connect the D1 to a regulator – it should
    get it's power direct from the dynamo. Research the specification for
    your current lights to see how they regulate the extra dynamo power.
    Most 'dump' anything over 6V as heat, but the D1 uses this extra
    capacity to provide greater output at higher speeds.

  • Did you know straight away after? I forded a river over the weekend that didn't actually submerge my hub but alot of water got thrown up.

    Anyone know how to regrease an SP dynamo hub?

  • Shortening the wires for the sake of tidyness will extend lifetime how?
