  • I don't know what the US price is but if you pay US prices online doesn't that include their taxes?

  • Well fuck. It’s often cheaper for us to order stuff from the UK then it is to order from websites in the US. If anyone wants a Beacon I’ll stuff my bag when I’m flying to Cambridge in Sept.

  • Us price is $350 so about £280. Online purchases with tax are convoluted in the US. Basically it’s if the company had an office in the state it’s being shipped to you pay taxes.

  • It's complicated in the States as sales tax is levied by the State, rather than being a Federal tax, so it varies from state to state.

  • Yeah, that's what I recall from buying stuff in shops but I don't know how that works for online buys in the USA.

  • Currently with mail order/internet purchases the retailer has to have a physical presence in the state that the item is being shipped to for the retailer to collect taxes for the state that the item is being shipped to. This is changing in the near future due to a court decision a year ago. Some companies, like Amazon have been collecting sales tax for a few years now. International sales will not be including state sales tax because the destination is not a US state.

So If I purchase something from say California shipped to Boston I’ll be paying .0625 sales tax, someone in NYC will be paying both NY .04 and NYC .045 sales tax, if it was shipped to New Hampshire there is no sales tax ‘cause NH doesn’t have sales tax.

I have yet to see anything purchased from outside the US get a sales tax added and in general I get VAT removed.

  • So I can get a 650b dynamo front wheel from work for about £85 new but dont recognise the hub. Anyone able to shed some light on this and whether it's worth it? Complete dynamo noob here so apologies in advance.

  • More photos needed...

  • looks like it's a Jtek
    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/dynamos/32-jtek-disc-dynamo-hub-wo-skewer-black/

probably ok for the price for a whole wheel.

  • If it's made in Taiwan and it's not an SP it'll be a KT...

    http://www.kttw-hub.com/pro.php?m=l&f=4&cid=12

KT used to make the hub shells for SP - hence the visual similarities (i.e. ripped them off)

    Edit - J-Tek are re-branded KT

  • I'll get a few more pics today, looks like it matches the hub in @sohi 's link. Comes with replaceable end caps.

Another ridiculous question, how would I know how powerful it is? And what lights it would be able to run? It says 6V3W on the side so I'm assuming I aim for two lights that require half of that?

  • Yes, but the Jteks are QR only..

  • Anyone know if these H-Tek/TK ones are any good?

  • 3W is pretty much standard for hub dynamos and is ample to power any front/rear light combo and in most cases (at average road speeds) a charger too. Some 1.5w models do exist (shimano make a 1.5w XT model) that will power lights only, the advantage being lower resistance.

The vast majority of dynamos/lights are built to be plug & play so you don't really have to worry too much about power outputs. Any light from supernova, B&M, exposure etc. should play nice with that hub, feel free to check first though.

  • Couple more pics as requested. Have just seen it comes in 700c as well which would save building a matching rear...

  • Think they’re ok. Alpkit are using the same ones and I’ve not heard of any complaints...

    https://www.alpkit.com/products/love-mud-juice

  • Still same manufacturer

  • It makes me sad... sjs offer a trade discount of 33% to shops / frame builders etc.

  • Hope it's ok to plug my sale here.

  • I don't know much about dynamos but I've just seen the following wheel for €40-
    Ryde Sputnik rim
    Shimano DH-3N80 dynamo hub
36 Sapim Leader stainless steel spokes (1 spoke needs replacing)
    Pasela Panaracer PT 26x1.75 tyre

Is that a good deal? Would that do a front and rear light or just front? Are dynamos really that much better over usb rechargeable lights?

  • Yes and yes.

That's a solid setup for getting you about. Add a decent lighting system to the lot, and you can have a set up you can see in pitch black with.
Jumping on a bike without having to worry about lighting is, as the overused adage is, a game changer.

  • For €40 go for it!

    Dynamos are so fucking good,

  • I am after a 12mm TA dynamo hub and I can see is either an SP PD-8x (£123) or Shimano DH-UR705-3D. I don't need to charge stuff or am planning really long rides, commuting and the odd winter ride.

    Are there any cheaper options?

  • After about 8,000km the bearings on my SP disc hub have started cracking and creaking. No play yet and they managed 800km through Sweden with my fingers in my ears singing 'LalalalalaIcanthearyoulalalala'

As they are not user-serviceable the wheel would need to go back to Taiwan to be serviced, not ideal so I think Im going to bite the bullet and buy a wheel with a SON hub, should last the rest of my life going by reviews.
