  • Ah sweet, lemme know if you decide to sell. I'm after that model

  • I’m in the same situation on a wheelbuild. I am thinking that pacenti SL25 in 32h are really not out there anymore. I’m thinking a kinlin
Rim from @cycleclinic and desticker the pacenti

  • 29er or 650b?

  • FYI, I was told by DCR wheels that:

'The Kinlin XR-31 disc rim is an asymmetric rim which is actually not what I would recommend with the (SON) 28 hub due to the low dish'.

  • 29er

As an aside I was talking to my flatmate about it the other day and he casually responded it "Why didn't you ask me? I was on the phone with the Vice President [so I Assume not Kirk himself] yesterday. I'll ask him later this week for you"

That said if it falls through and you have a spare I'd be very interested in it!

  • Flatmates in high places! Nah, I have a spare 650b, unfortunately. My front wheel taco'd rather violently and I replaced them with WTB rims.

  • Ask JRA. They still have some.

  • That's why I have a Kinlin sitting here unbuilt. The SP disc hubs are symmetrical.

  • Should I get a dynamo installed into my partner's Sequoia front wheel for perma light?
It's gonna be spendy as fuck isn't it? De-lace, new hub, new spokes, wheel build, then new light set.

  • Yes and yes

  • Stupid bikes.

  • 12x100 right?

  • Have you got a spare?

  • Yeah, be the same as my Tripster

  • maybe I am wrong but I thought you had a SP laced onto lightbicycle spare ..

  • Finally I've made the plunge into dynamos - I thought I would share my observations.

I went for the Shimano Deore XT DH-T780 hub dynamo (the one that came pre built in a mavic road wheel from Rose, sadly no longer available) and after 6 weeks I have been very impressed. Looks-wise, it's not as slick as a SON, but its drag is barely noticeable and it gives lots of power, even at low speed. Not sure about long term durability yet obvs.

Since then, unfortunately for my bank balance, I got tempted by a new bike in the end of season sales, and my new mavic/XT wheel is sadly no longer compatible as it's for calipers and my new bike is disks. I indulgently had a new dynamo wheel built up by London Bicycle Workshop who recommended the SP 8 series instead.

It's early days with the SP, but it seems quite different to the XT. Even less drag, super tiny, and a much nicer design. But I can't help thinking at lower speeds that the XT is more potent. Has anyone else experienced this? It's not really much of a problem the vast majority of time - it's just the stroby flashing of the headlamp seems more noticeable at lower speeds and might be annoying for others (and me!).

I just wondered if others had noticed anything similar, or that maybe this is actually a good thing for the longevity of the hub.

I'm still super pleased with the new set up btw, I just was interested what the general consensus was.

    • De-lace - free, takes 10 mins. Cut the spokes if you're ultra lazy. Keep two to measure ERD.
    • new spokes - you can get a wheel's worth of ACI Alpina for <£15 - maybe not #buyer enough for you but they're fine for most stuff
    • wheel build - forumites have offered to do this for free (beer?) in the past. You could do it yourself but I know you hate maintenance

Hub and lights are the only expensive bits really.

  • QR not TA

I don't have any QR + disc bikes to use that wheel with.
Might part it up and sell it off but it'd be a shame to waste Scherrit's build.

  • I'm going to wait until she gets her 'race' wheel so I don't disable her bike with this nonsense.

I should hit Supernova up for a discount. They were offering cheaper lights for TCR racers and since I've ridden three of them...

  • Would still be interested in the hub if cheap. Deep carbon a bit much for my commute though.

  • Are there other sensible options to the Plug 3 usb connector to connect the dynamo hub to a battery pack?

  • How good or bad an idea is it to swap my hope 25 front hub for this;

    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/dynamos/24-schmidt-son-delux-12-disc-dynamo-front-hub-black-anodised/

The front hub is 24 count but I've ridden cobbles and all road surfaces with no issues I weigh 76kg. Also how much should I expect to pay for a strip and rebuild of the front wheel?

  • Just bear in mind the comparative flange width. You could end up with a noodlier wheel

  • Chances are you’d need new spokes in the build so you’d only be reusing the rim, might as well just have a whole build on a kinlin rim or similar no?

Then have the normal front wheel to switch back in for summer rides

  • Thanks @TvH
    Yeah probably right @PhilDAS
    I'll go a different route!
