  • *so *last autumn I became fed up with my current bike , kept coming across bikes on here like this........

  • a wanted something far more suitable (and nicer than 531, steel forks) for riding road, than my track bike. something with brakes, and carbon forks. and something id be able to set up as single speed.

over Christmas the parts accumulation began.

was originally going to go for some lesser forks. but Christmas was kind enough.
and ive always lusted after SG 75's, must get some on this build......

  • in January I went to see Mr steve goff again. with my plans and more cash.
after a good chat about getting another track frame , with added cable stops and brake bridges , *and *after constantly lusting over some lovely road bikes on here.
    I changed my mind.
again and again. until I settled on something quite shocking. id decided I want gears. *maybe. *......
    months later. this was born.

  • plan is , something I can ride with a full groupset, but if I want. I can ride fixed.
already have some paul comp hubs. and a 130mm replacement axle. laced to velocity a23's. brilliant !!!

and about a month ago this got thrown together in my garage.

  • Looks really nice! Great job

  • nitto stem, bars and post. no Thomson here.
    sram levers, campy centaur brakes.
white industries freewheel. sg 75 ring.
    Columbus minimal forks. fsa headset.

don't look at that fork steerer just yet.

its ok. at this point it really isn't finished.

  • im currently sat here looking at a gipiemme 3/32 50t 144bcd ring.
    a paul thumbie.
3 single speed cogs for shimano splined road hubs.
and an old shimano 600 tricolour mech.

8 speed chain, right hand DA bar end shifter and cables in the post.

I will eventually be splashing out an a full groupset , but for the time being cash is going on wheels.
originally I wanted some ambrosio nemesis and hope hubs, but ...... im only a poor wee boy so...

took a pair of these ....

  • #####not actual size#######

    and a pair of these....

down to my local bike shop.

they'll be ready soon. he he he.

  • what do you lot reckon then ?

    Athena ? centaur? black ? carbon ? silver ?

rival or force or red ?

    105 even ?

im thinking mostly about keeping the single chainring. (maybe a 48t 3/32 dura ace) with a 8 speed sram cassette/mech. right hand only rival lever, wich might be ok with the levers I already on there. ?

  • took this last night . still want to take 10mm of the steerer. and its got different wheels. miche/velocity aero. .......getting there.........

  • is it possible to get Athena on this. but keep those SG 75's on there ?

    ?

  • I'm confused! One moment you have DA shifter in the post, then you're taking about Sram and then Athena? General rule is you need to match the rear mech, cassette and rear shifter to make it work without work arounds if your using STI.

Anyway, I can't see why you couldn't make Athena work with a single 3/32 chainring. To make 11speed chains the width of the chain is narrower but the space between the plates is the same as a 9 or 10 speed chain.

Take a look at this .. http://www.cycleexif.com/david-smiths-10-speed .. It's a bit more then I think your aiming for but it's in my bookmarks ..

I do get a bit excited. to much coffee. ive got a head like a box of frogs.

the david smith is tottaly the kind of thing im after.
what im currently doing is a bit of research and development with cheaper used parts , for instance what size ring, 50 or 42 t.and what kind of cassette will work best , close range or 32inner cog, wich will then mean a medium cage mech and so on. getting an idea of what will work , or not before spending huge amounts of cash.

I was told that a 3/32 144bcd dura ace chain ring wont work with a 10 / 11 speed chain ? if they do, then that's a big problem sorted. I was imagining having one custom/bespoke made and it eating into my pockets.

looking forwards to the building and refining as much as riding the thing to be honest.

  • any better pictures of the finished frame, John? I'd like to add this to the Goff gallery

unfortunately not many good pictures of just the frame. I got a bit to excited and just built it up.

  • Will upload to the gallery in a while

    ?

If you can find a 3/32 chainring to fit the 75's sure.

  • How long did you have to wait from ordering to recieving?

    so nice though!

a lifetime. ordered October. was promised February. received may. may 31st.

a guy like steve though, has the pleasure of being able to take his time. if you know what I mean.

  • got my wheels last Saturday.and a fresh pair of vittoria corsas.my favourite tyres. 50 ring . 20 cog.
got it running smooth. really starting to get into this bike, really beginning to get to know it.
this is my back yard, in the distance is parbold hill. in between, in a valley there is roby mill. this was taken up on beacon country park.
there are hills here where I live, short , sharp , steep , rough as fuck, winding hills. pure torture garden. ive been enjoying a freewheel now for over a month. I have become lazy.
still want to get some gears on this thing though.
alls I need is a shifter.
rims are as comfy and solid feeling as my velocity a23's, but stiffer , maybe because of the extra 4 spokes.
    hubs are ace. lovely smooth.

    damn.

  • rides nice eh? his bikes just do.

out of interest, what are the frame dimensions?

  • I took the measurements from my favourite frame. tweaked it a wee bit. here and there, this frame, but a wee bit relaxed. more road friendly. less twitchy / scary as fuck during decents.

  • so, about 22" sq?
