once a spoke goes/looses tension on other rims, the rim will move, increasing the chance of folding.

Pro teams use the same box section tub rims for multiple Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders.
Of course you can't probably compare riding on Pave to tricks riding, so er...
But they ride box section rims because they're more flexible and so provide more comfort over the pave than the super stiff wheels normally used by racers, which kinda undermines the argument!
Would a flexible wheel hold up to tricks better by having some give before it bends? I guess not looking at BMX wheels.

BMX, and MTB wheels are not really comparable with 700c.
consider that the smaller size means the spokes travel from the hub flange to the rim at a more acute angle, meaning the eyelets or spoke holes are offset "sided" to assist a smooth direction.
same with wider axle sizes, like MTB stuff.
Imagine a deep section 20" wheel, how the spokes would go from the rim centre to the hub flange, you'd have to do some serious designing for it to work.
also road wheels are not designed to take side impact, a rock or stone hitting a deep section rim will bugger it.

come back to me in 2 years of abuse and show me a straight rim
as a giver or a taker?

ahh, for the good old days of Z rims ;)...

yup, bringing this back up, anyone know if the bearings are the same front and back?? i know the axles are different at the ends. goldtec, told me they had bearings in stock this morning, wouldn't say the sizes. not heard back, and i might have to swap them out.

• #108
anyone?
-
• #109
Nope they're different, can't remember the sizes now but I did swap mine out... Speak to Will at BETD, he'll tell ya... If he picks the phone up... ;]
EDIT Bought mine online and spent way less than Goldtec wanted... -

From memory 6001 (front) and 6005 (back)... I'd check tho'... Mine were SKF, I think... £6 per wheel...

think it's 6001 rear

I broke a Goldtec hub, flange went in much the same way as yours, only two spokes pulled out. They sent me a new hub shell. I swapped the parts over and built a new wheel, I think they sent the hubshell in about 2 days after phoning them and I was back on the road in a day or two. No problems since.

Fuck!
This has happened to me tonight! A whole chunk of the flange came off. (Will post pics)
Obviously, I will email them once I had my dinner, but just wanted to know from AlexB where he bought the hub. I got mine from outspoken cycles.I built the wheels myself with a crowsfoot pattern, which apparently makes strong wheels. Does that have an effect on the hubs though?

oh bugger what a pain! I dont know if building crowsfoot will affect the strength for certain, but from the direction that the spokes go you would think it puts a little more stress on flange because its a slightly more concentrated area. Then again, that really shouldnt happen so easily. did the back wheel take any big impacts?
-
• #120
looks like there's a crack on the otherside too.

I'm no trickster at all, but roads do have potholes and I can remember hitting one last week.

You're right. I haven't noticed that so far. Does that mean anything or does that affect my reasoning with Goldtec?

Clean your wheels you digusting human being...
Bad luck lenni, have nothing to really add constructively but goldtechs reputation suggests it will be resolved amicably.

shit! hope that didnt cause a crash
ive heard such mixed stories of goldtecs. a friend at work knows a courier whos been using the same pair for 10ish years and never had a single problem! the only problem ive had is with the fucking axle on the back being a pain to put into the dropouts, besides that i reckon they're pretty damn good.
Yes but lateral rigidity doesn't necessarily equal strength when it comes to rims, that doesn't mean anything when it comes to durability.
