Indeed, I'm a horrid grinder of a rider, but I'll go with a period block.
I probably won't use half of this kit in the end, just trawled the parts bin, I had thought that I could combine a mixture of 50's and 70's kit on this, but given the way I bemoaned the modern/vintage mash up I had before, I think I'm better sticking to one era and doing it properly.
Which era that is, I don't know at the mo!

I'll take some photos this weekend of them. Not sure If I have all the stays bud I'll root around to see if I can find them. Is the bike on 27 inch wheels?

Thanks
Yeah I'm planning on running 27" wheels

If it's more for the 50's you're going for, I've got a set of Hiduminium brakes and levers that I could do you a good deal on. Bit of a polish and they'd come up great.

Here is one set of bluenmels. I have another set somewhere that are a bit cleaner overall but lack the flap on the bottom of the front guard. I haven't had chance to hunt out the stays yet but I'll look as soon as possible this wéek if your interested, as well as photographing the other set of guards.

Lovely, thank you.
Certainly look the others out ans post some photos up. I'm pretty sure that I'll take one set (want to do some more 'guards research as I'm leaning towards 70's ATM) and i'm sure someone else will have the other set too!

Hey. Sorry for the somewhat tardy response. Been a busy old week. Here are the other set of bluemels-better condition but without the flap on the end:

cheers, I'll have a think.
I've decided to build this up with the Campag bits I have, which are nearly all 70's apart from the late 60's hubs.
I'll need to add (quite a) few bits like the cranks and get rid of what I have thats surplus, like the Williams Cranks and Coloral Double bottle holder.
I'm a tad conflicted on the mudguards though, what would a bike like this of had in the early 70's, my heart says Blumels, but my head reckons I'm missing something.....

Coloral Double bottle holder.
Dibs please if you're selling!

PM'd
I wil be selling some bits and I will post up here first to give you guys a heads up.
The C34 Chainset is definitely for sale, as it will make me replace it!
I'm keen to swap bits rather than sell in the first instance, so here is my fanciful shopping list...
I'm after;
- Late 60's/70's bar and stem combo (English or Italian)
- Period cabling
- Down tube bottle cage
- Campag Cranks
- 70's Nuovo Record Cranks
- 60'/70's Nuovo Record Pedals
- Period (Silca) Pump
- Period 27" Rims
- 6 Speed Campag Freewheel (I'll be lucky!)
- Various Campag clip on cable stops, clips etc.
- Guards (undecided)
- Late 60's/70's bar and stem combo (English or Italian)

probably in better nick these, and tbh I think they are probably more recent -late 60's at very earliest.

Nice
I have been lucky and got a job lot of parts from @which included some blue lightweights. Thank you very much for the effort, I'm sure these will find good homes though.

I have a quandary of sorts.
27" rims or 700's?
It seems that the 70's was a mixture of both (well all eras have a mix really don't they, look at 650b's comeback ATM)
I've always been a 50's/60's man in terms of bikes so with the 70's it's a learning process. It seems to be a period of fairly rapid change and I think this bike reflects that with its dropout upgrade then.
I know from previous experiments both 27's and 700's fit neaty under gaurds so which do I pump for?
I've done some research and I can fairly easily get period rims in both sizes, but which ones!?
All opinions sought :)

I guess it's a question of what you're looking for. I quite like the 'full' look they have on a gent's frame, with the slightly bigger diameter, wider rim and bigger tyre. But, I accept that the choice of tyres is limited - and they can be a pretty tight fit with mudguards. There's certainly no shortage of good 27" rims from the 70s though. I think I'd go 27".

Hmmm, I'm leaning that way I must admit. Even more so now that I have seen you can get Panaracer Pasela PT's in 27x1" & 27x1/8"
-
• #121
You CAN get them. But Panaracer 27x1 Very hard to find, certainly in UK. 27×1 1/8th not so bad though. Just remember Panaracer do come up a little on the large size though. So 27 × 1 1/8th more like 27 1 1/4 in other brands.

Cheers, good tyre tips!

May sound heretical but I find the Velo orange cabling sets are good for the vintage builds. Used them on my Olmo and Hetchins.
I used white but if you want earlier they do do the wound steel ones... -
• #124
Yeah its a good Shout. I used white on the bike before and I will do again, if I cant find enough NOS stuff.
I actually reckon it may just be front brake cabling that I'm missing.
Waiting on a big parts packet so I can make a proper assesment
I've always rather liked Williams C34 chainsets, they're basic no nonsense kit which is perfectly adequate for everything except actual competition.
However this C34 doesn't have anything in common with the campag derailleurs shown above - it's from a different era having pre-war origins, whereas the Nuovo Records are probably dated 1970's (there should be a date stamp near the cable entry point).
The C34 will almost certainly not be smaller than 46/49 teeth (it may be larger), but I don't think the Campag will cope with a bottom sprocket over 26 teeth. So that gives a minimun gear just a tad under 48". In my youth I thought my 51"bottom touring gear was spectacularly low, but I wouldn't think that now. Is 48" going to be suitable for your purpose?
Incidentally, that spare ring would need to be drilled out to take the sleeved bolt on the double set which are a later type of fixing.
