  • I don't agree with minimum wage for anyone but it may well be suitable for a very menial job like, I would imagine, filling shelves in Tesco.

The 'funny' thing is, some of those menial jobs pay quite well because they're night shift or other odd hours.

  • I've got a 5 years old at home doing fuck all. Any capitalists willing to take it on board for £3.50 an hour?

How is said child with bike cleaning? I could also do with some more helpers at the 24hr. I'll pay double for night shift obviously.

Begging is a good business, but my gypsy dad takes all the money.

  • When I worked there Richard fired me with 0 notice because he felt he wasn't making enough money at the time which because I'd been living on minimum wage meant I had no savings and eventually resulted in me being homeless. He had just opened and ended up with too much of the wrong stock. Looks like he's doing alright now though.

What did your contract "whatever that is!" say about the appropriate notice?

JB, when he worked at Tesco, got paid a fair bit more than I got at Cycle Surgery. Bike shops paying fuck all isn't unusual, CS pay minimum wage + holiday allowance + 0.5% sales commission. Independent shops who place more value on their staffs' expertise tend to demand experience as well.

Getting paid less than a living wage for a job you're good at, which requires technical knowledge and customer service skills is demeaning and soul-destroying.

  • Sweet jeezebus! Not sure I will be using my local anymore...

  • Its not their fault that there is a recession on.

    There's a cash-grab going on - that's what..

    NEF put it more eloquently,

Economic inequality in the UK grew dramatically during the 1980s and 90s and has remained at historically high levels. A cycle linking wealth, education, the labour market and globalisation has created the conditions for inequality to flourish and feed on itself. By examining the policies of more equal countries, we find that inequality is not inevitable and that it can be effectively tackled by addressing its root causes.

Their intervention suggestion regarding the Labour Market,

High income differentials are at the frontline in perpetuating economic inequality and the stark divisions that exist in our society in terms of access to resources, decision-making and opportunity. Possible solutions include the Living Wage and/or the introduction of maximum wage ratios within companies and organisations.

Such ratios have previously been around 1:10 (the Royal Navy had a ratio of 1:8).

  • Communists? Ha.

If you're a recruiter looking to employ someone then having a grasp on the basics, like hours, wages etc., is essential. The way Richard Balfe phrased above it sounds like he couldn't give a shit about that, hence the comments.

It is a massive fucking kick in the teeth for any potential applicant isn't it. Not "Unfortunately, due to the tough financial environment we can't offer more than minimum wage" or "Salary is negotiable depending on experience, but won't be much above minimum wage" just "I don't know how little I can get away with paying you, but it will be that."

  • Yikes that got misinterpreted badly. What I meant was that being paid minimum wage is normally too little to be paid to live unless you are living witn your parents/at college not that I don't agree with minimum wage.....

Don't worry, that's how I read it the first time.

    I blame EEI...

  • Pro Tall Pyramid then (wage-slavery for those at the bottom),

    Indeed.

The problem is not so much the minimum wage existing, more that it's used as a benchmark for employers who think it's a fair thing to offer.
Unless wages are also controlled at the top end, the 'minimum' wage is increased and both of those bookends are brought closer together, there will still be huge uncontrollable imbalances in the way wealth is distributed in this country.

Also the stigma applied by society to so called 'menial' jobs and the perpetuation of the belief that people must be 'high achievers' (even if the education system is dumbed down accordingly) means that unemployment won't be reduced and those in socially attractive jobs may be underpaid (see baristas on minimum wage etc).

  • Plus the need to reform the letting industry. If people can't afford inflated rents on their homes or their businesses, everyone loses apart from the landlords.

When is this whole feudal system fad going to pass? Stableboy wanted, excellent knowledge of horses required, not sure what the going rate is, but you'll get a turnip to take home each week.

    Aye!

If I wanted a feudal system I'd go back to being a Samurai in 12th century Japan ffs

  • I can't wait for the minimum wage to go up so I get a pay rise.

  • You greedy cunt. I bet you're even expecting it to increase in line with inflation.

Sorry, read half the way only. Took half the minimum wage, though.

  • Thanks, I usually can't form an opinion without seeing any graphs and/or animated gifs.

  • I see sports aren't included in the hellish pyramid. Not sure if I should be pleased or worried.

  • 'involves'

  • 'involves'

I can't be bothered to redo it.

  • But ... but ... have you ever seen a mis-spelled meme? :)

  • Well... if it really upsets you Oliver.
