  • here we go again....

this is an old forum ride which i cannot claim to have started but am very happy to continue. i've ridden three of these now and enjoyed them all.

it's a 90 mile route out of london from speakers corner, hyde park, all the way down to the stones at avebury. it is a perfect route to ride fixed.

plan will be to depart at 19.00 thusday 20th and arrive to the stones in time for sunrise on the solstice. that gives us 9 hours which should be enough.

with the above in mind i'd like to keep the group small.

this is not a ride to cut your teeth on.

    ride notes to follow.

    list time.

    2. laner
  • In. It's tradition now.

  • hmmm. Tempted. Although the thought of failing to arrive pre-sunrise 3 times in a row is kind of putting me off.

  • I'm in the same place as CB. Going to check the diary to see if I can get it in...

It is a brilliant ride regardless.

  • currently 50 odd pound for 4 tickets on groupsave.

i'll pick up a set, travelling from pewsey.

  • I'm also tempted by this. Is the pace really 10mph or is that just factoring in mechanicals / crashes / stopping to coo at wildlife?

  • And pooing. Don't forget pooing.

  • ...

    Out.

  • it was pretty slow last year
    http://app.strava.com/activities/11440086

  • the first few years we made it there for sunrise no problems but the sun actually didn't rise, it was so cloudy that the sun never actually emerged until later in the afternoon on the journey home

sunrise is much overrated !! just have your met office app logged on to sunrise times

    y u so slow ?

  • i think it's numbers that slow the group.

the 1st years i rode and we managed sunrise we were 5 only.

slow and steady wins the race, and drinks beer in the pub.

  • Slow and steady does not make the pre-booked train on time however, as I remember us crushing it back to pewsey for about 40 mins and only just making it

  • Are we not a bit ahead of ourselves planning the ride for 2103?

Slow and steady wins the race. Bring lots of flapjacks.

we paced ourselves pretty well i thought steve
made it there with ample time to soak in a bit of atmosphere and sink a cold one ! before the sun didn't rise

whats all this about pubs ! is that part of the ritual nowadays ... after the naked virgins but before the slaughtered goats ?

  • bump

  • Looks good but I will have to work on Friday. What time is the train back?

  • This is all about wheelies, right?

  • If you need to get back for work in the morning you'll have to think carefully about which train to book yourself on. Some people left the ride before avebury 2years ago. I have work that Friday which has ruled me out :/

  • ^ sad to hear that but understandable, i was on of the ones who scarpered to the train. it was was horrible 15 miles in 40 odd minutes with no energy and a train to catch.

    this year however...

i've just booked an off peak groupsave 4 for travel from pewsey for 55 pounds.
    train at 08.09

    edit.
4 bicycles also booked onto this train

  • I'm thinking of coming the other way, 51 miles there and 51 back to Cheltenham, although I may cycle up the evening before, may bump into you. Ready to get my druid on

  • Shit Steve, can't make this with work commitments.

I was out on your Streatham to Kent/Surrey hills loop on Sunday and was wondering when this ride would be and if I could make it :(

  • Do you chaps still need recruits to cover that groupsave.. ?

  • all yours sir.

    it's looking like:

    me
    laner
    fixed cheese
    rod munch

    dicki - you in??

  • also i updated the route to the ridewithgps one now in the OP.

it cuts out a couple of main road sections.
