  • So I picked this up tonight:

And will be roughly modelling it on this

    more on this, to follow...

  • And will be roughly modelling it on this

...which could perhaps have been modelled on this...

...the production version of which is now in stock at All-City.
Nice Ritchey homage. I saw Jeff's bike in the metal and it looked fucking rad. Painted fork is a must.

  • Yup it was originally that colour.

The pomp is a nod towards Ritchey.

Mine doesn't come with a fork, which is why Im looking at the all city's with carbon forks.

  • Build list will be roughly:

    Cxp33's laced to 105 hubs.
Sram drivetrain (will see what comes up)
    s500 brake levers
ec90 cx forks/Alpina cx forks (straight blade)
    3t finishing kit
    Brakes - not sure. Thoughts?

    Pretty boring/standard.

  • Re: Brakes - P'raps consider good old V-brakes (not minis) with Drop-V levers?
Avid still do a nice range of calipers or you could pick up a nice clean set of M951 XTRs.
FWIW I also think it would look better on grey Archetypes (which are a bit wider iirc, and could offer a better tyre profile).
I wanted Archetypes for my Pomp build but VeloMine were out of stock when I was ready to order, so I went TB14. Wider rim seems appropriate.

  • From my extensive experience of high end cantilever type brakes, I'd go for either the TRP CX9/CX8.4 v-brakes or the Avid Ultimate Shorties.

The latter are better for mud clearance.

Nice project btw, Joe. Will we see you race it at Muddy Hell?

  • Ah great, I hoped one of the cyclocross heads would turn up!

I've been looking at the Avid Ultimates, you'd say they're worth it? They'd work fine with the s500 levers?
If I was looking at a slightly cheaper option, 40-50 is there good options? or should I just go for the extra 20-30 quid?

Plan is to build it up slowly over the next few months and yes, lungs allowing, race muddy hell and hopefully a few more cx races.

Yeah I'm sure archetypes would be nice, but the cxp33's are good rims and 105's are good hubs - plus a work colleague has them built already and they are up for next to nothing.

    Fair play, sounds good.

  • In an ideal work I'd be rocking some HED ardennes - maybe in the future. :D

  • Have you started to think about tyre pressures yet?

  • 110psi

In terms of performance and ease of set up then I think they are by far the best cantilevers on the market. Setting them up takes time to begin with but once you know the order of things it's dead easy to adjust them. They offer good modulation and, if you grab a hand full of lever, they offer enough power to stop quickly. I'd run mine full time on my cross bike if it didn't have to double up as the child carrying bike (the rack fouls them).

The CX9s are good too, but aren't quite as powerful.

I've also tried Euro-Xs and Frog Legs and both are a massive pain in the arse to set up and don't offer anywhere near the modulation or power of the other two.

  • Cheers Andy!

  • If you need s500 lever I have some I would part with

  • black?

  • Yep, big scratch on left lever could easily be touched up with some paint. Pm me if you want

  • Cool, I'll be in touch

Don't know if I'm just misreading, do you mean 20-30 per brake? cos i can only find avid ultimates at being 70 each, so 140 for a brakeset (extra £60+ to the others) feels alot!

  • No, I was meaning per brake - Although I have watched several pairs of ultimates go for around a ton.

More and more I've been thinking about the TRP's Andy recommended - as that guy knows.

  • I've been shopping around a lot too and can't seem to find something at the right price,

I didn't want to spend more than ~£80 on the set and there seems not to be much middle ground between frogs legs at <£40 and the £100+ range

  • get the TRP's then

  • yea, cx9s are looking good right now

  • I've gone off the CX9s recently as I've had to bin the front pair, as the tension adjustment screw thread stripped.

  • spanner >>>> works

    thanks andy ;)

  • Oh great!

Back to the bloody drawing board.
