Ooooh this is tempting... but return train issues potentially for me (Nottingham).

Ride is a bit beyond my stamina/fitness levels atm but have some rep for this
We're going to have about 120 miles to cover all in, so we'll need to get up and** atom** early - Lea Bridge Road roundabout at 8.30am for a prompt 8.45 departure.
Brilliant.
e2a oh. Boo. Gotta spread some rep before I'm allowed to give you anymore.

Bet you'll ride this whether it's sunny or uranium.
-
• #5
You've got 6 weeks Poots! Plenty of time to get the miles in.

The original idea of these three rides (there's another, longer one!) was that the distance would steadily increase so that just doing them would help build the miles up.
The problem is there's a big jump from Bradwell to Sizewell, then a much smaller jump to the third one.
If we got the train out to Ingatestone that would knock about 25 miles off, would that mean more people would be interested?
I'd move the power stations, but you know, it's a lot of bother.

Would it be possible to do it on the Saturday?
Just cos then if its really nice weather- some could camp and ride back? -
• #8
the following week is DD...
Nice to put some decent country miles in before the DD...
Potentially in

What kind of pace are we looking at, Fox? My initial instinct is "holy shit I am all over this" but I'd be doing it fixed which means slow.
Also, ermagherd cermping @eyebrows. This shizz has win written all over it.

@laner - yes, it will be rubbish. I realise now I should have put 'HHSB' in the title, then more people would have signed up.
@bothwell - I'm really really fast so I doubt anyone will be able to keep up. #LOLLE
Serious answer is that as long as you're definitely fine with doing the distance fixed you'll be fine. If we do book advance tickets we'll need to make sure we make the train, obviously, but it's always the stopped time that has more affect on these things than the pace. I will do calculations that err on the safe side, especially as we want pub time at the end, so it should all be fine.
I was going to do it on gears to be honest but I'm not averse to doing it fixed. In fact I just may do that.
If people (or even a person) want to camp then I could actually do the Saturday as long as that doesn't mean someone can't come?

im coming geared

• #14
Well duh. :P
I do want you to come though. No bedwetting!

• #16
im coming geared
be like TdL all over again once in Suffolk, fields of hay!
-
• #17
love the idea!

Realistically I think most will be on gears for a ride of this length. I may well do gears myself, as to be honest I have turned into a roadie douche bag and mostly ride gears these days.

:(

• #20
so have you
-
• #21
well, you now have gears to go with it

Up for a saturday. I could arrange a feed stop/cold beer in Ipswich if anyone's interested.

Regarding:
Fox, slowness of: I've ridden with you exactly once, and the only times I saw anything of you other than a tiny dot in the distance was at the start before we set off and at the end when we had finished;
Miles, comfortableness of: Fox, you'll have probably noticed my recent exploits on strava - I'm happy with riding 115 miles fixed and in any case this ride is the weekend before the DD that I also intend to ride fixed, so I'm pretty happy with the mileage itself;
Gears, use of: If everybody brings gears then it would suck for everyone if I was the only fixed rider as I'll have to smash it to try to keep up and everybody else will have to spend loads of time hanging about waiting;
Camping, pursuit of: I haven't even got a tent but I swear to god I will buy one if there is ANY possibility of us camping, we could have TOASTED NUCLEAR MARSHMALLOWS IN THE DARK. Really.

tl;dr

I'll be fixed, I'll be slow and if possible I will camp
Nuclear power! The environmental bogie man, here to kill us all with RADIATION. Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, Fukushima... Scared yet?
Who wants to go near a nuclear power station? Not if you want to have children! Better put your lead underpants on! Far be it from me to point out that if you look at deaths per TWh rooftop solar panels are apparently more dangerous. (Actually the death of nuclear will probably be economic: it's far too expensive to build then decommission power stations, but whatever).
Anyway, who cares about all that? Let's go for a ride! The great thing about nuclear power stations is that they are built in some of the most remote areas of the country. Just in case, you know, it all goes tits up. This means they are located in some of the most beautiful, eerie and empty parts of England, far away from the herds. You'll really feel like you've ridden somewhere!
For the second ride we're going to Sizewell B on Saturday 13th July via Chigwell and Kelvedon Hatch, before heading north east up through Essex to Maldon, then passing through Colchester, Manningtree and Ispwich before cutting across towards the coast through Snape.
This is a 2-4-1 ride really, because as well as Sizewell B we'll get to see Sizewell A, which is currently being decommissioned. Although A doesn't sound like a giant vacuum cleaner, and doesn't have a dome on top. B has both of these things :)
There's even a big beach too, if you like that sort of thing.
This is the route:

Afterwards we can have dinner at the Vulcan Arms, national winner of the 2010 Inn Sign Society Sign of the Year Award!!1! More importantly they do cheap, filling pub food. And beer.
It's then a short ride back to Saxmundham to get the train. It potentially gets a bit complicated here, but basically if we book in advance we should be fine - tickets are £8 right now. We may need to split into a few groups to make it work, more info on this will follow.
We're going to have about 120 miles to cover all in, so we'll need to get up and atom early - Lea Bridge Road roundabout at 8.30am for a prompt 8.45 departure.
