Are there any Alu CX frames with horizontal dropouts (decent or otherwise)?
Yes, Mielec. Are there any other steel frames I should think about?
Lot's but if you are on budget don't bother. What rim options do I have?
stans iron cross, velocity a23 NMSW, archetypes; stans are the lightest. -

Quite like the look of this as a wheelset:
Hope Pro 2 Evo 32h black (QR)
Velocity A23 NMSW
DT Swiss Competition Spokes (Black)
Black Brass Nipples
Tubeless Valve Adapter£390 for Front & Rear including build / shipping.

i went with almost exact same wheelset for my build :) sapim instead of DT swiss, talk to hubjub for A23, i bought mine for £35 each

I was also wondering if there are any alu ss disc frames out there. I like the look of the new Specialized secteur disc but want to keep my alfine
-

Could go down the same line as Zdrenka on here?
-
• #9
^ That's lovely...!
Not sure I have the budget for that build. I probably have around £1,000 all in.
At the moment, I'm pretty tempted to get the Kaffenback, powder coat it matt black and keep the vertical dropouts. As it's going to be single speed, i'll be using a chain tensioner anyway.

The FM509 isn't so expensive
bang in this BEER components eccentric bb
I think that with seatpost, headset and clamp could be gotten for around 500-525.
The rest of his build is pretty high spec - but you could easily use that frame and come in at 1k.
n.b if you were going to use a tensioner the eccentric bb wouldn't be necessary, but they do look neater.

^ what he said
-
• #13
Yup that looks pretty similar to the FM 509.
I'd be pretty tempted to get some other carbon bits from them as well - which will come in cheap.
DO IT!
-
• #14
Hmmm. No combined postage and I don't think I really need anything else carbon. Got the wheelset etc sorted.
I'll get my Brompton sold and get the card out then....
-
• #15
Ooops. Just ordered the frameset and wheels...
-
• #16
Well done.
I'm looking forward to seeing this.
Are you bidding on the eccentric bb?
-
• #17
Nope... According to the eBay auction, the bb is a standard BSA job.
-
• #18
Nice frameset, looking forward to see the result!
You can also use an eccentric rear hub. White industries has them for disc brakes.. -
• #19
Wheelset is ordered so eccentric hub is out... Plus I don't like the look of the white industries stuff; not my cup of tea. Also, they're ££££££
I'll get it up and running with a chain tensioner and work it out from there.

The frame is waiting for me at work and the wheels have been delivered. I land back in the UK today so looking to pick up the few remaining bits I need.
Any thoughts on the crankset? It's a BSA standard BB shell... Anyone tried the shimano alfine 45t jobby? It doesn't look too bad for around £60 inc BB.

Cheers... Had seen those as well.
I'm putting the CX9s up for sale over the next couple of days. Interested?
-
• #23
yup, let me know
-
• #24
Ffs... Pretty much everything is built but I got a note from condor today and the trp hylex brakes aren't available until July!!
Guess the bike is on hold for a month

:(
Let me know about those cx9's
The last project I had was my BMC RoadRacer over 18 months ago so the itch for a new bike is pretty strong.
I really like the OTP Cannondale Cad X that I bought towards the end of last year but it feels a bit sluggish and despite upgrading the brakes to the TRP CX9s, I just can't get on with Mini Vs.
So.
New bike... I want to build a light (ish) single speed CX bike with discs.
So far, I have pre-ordered a set of the TRP Hylex things: http://shop.upgradebikes.co.uk/Catalogue/Brakes/Disc/TRP-Hylex
I've also picked up a new CX fork which is pretty light (for the price): http://www.fatbirds.co.uk/18859/products/kinesis-dc37-cx-disc-cyclocross--touring--road-mudguard-fork.aspx
Couple of things I need to think about:
Frame
Currently thinking of this.
Wheels
Bit stuck with these.... I want something light but hard wearing. Will probably get the bits and get a friendly mechanic to build them up but i'm tempted by these.
The issue is that I want to run 25c (28c max) tyres and i'm pretty sure all of the rims are too wide for that.
So; questions....
