This is what breton bikes has to say about 531st tubesets:
The standard 531 set is the 531c racing tubeset which makes for a
frame around 4 1/4lbs. This builds up into a fine responsive frame
ideally suited to road racing, but lacking a little stiffness in the bottom
bracket area. For smaller frame/riders it also make a nice touring
frame, but it really has too much flex to be good for someone carrying
full cyclecamping loads on a larger frame. To solve this weakness
531 st has a heavier gauge down tube which resists the flexing which
causes the dreaded speed wobbles on a loaded tourer. It also has
beefier stays for the loads imposed by cantilever brakes. The taper
gauge forks are of a flattened oval profile to give clearance for wider
tyres without using wide fork crowns, and that's it...So it might make sense to use 531st to achieve the extra stiffness you'd want for track sprinting in a larger frame that would otherwise be relatively flexible on account of its longer tubes?

My dawes cx is ST.
It's a fair bit heavy, but I was impressed at its stiffness for a old fashioned lugged frame. But mine is a 53cm frame so ymmv.

I was watching this, and really wanted it, but missed the end of the auction.... :(
I couldn't tell, but thought the headset was a Chris King sotte voce?
-
• #21
It does look like a CK.
Fantastic frame though, didn't notice the Welsh heritage!
-
• #22
Glad you got this, looking forward to the build. If it isn't your size, it'll fit me...
-
• #23
Its 3 cm taller than the Sirius and half a cm longer. I've got a lot of seatpost out on the Sirius so hoping this will fit.
I was looking at the pics trying to figure out if it's a CK headset, will have to wait and see. Either way, will probably be fitting a DA headset to this to go with the rest of the group, and moving this one to the Sirius.

You got a decent price on this man, nice one. So busy with revision I forgot to bid ha. Looking forward to what you got planned. Is it definitely 531 ST?

No idea, it hasn't arrived yet.
I'm so glad you were all busy, if this fits and rides well its a lifer.... (;
I'd been getting pretty jealous of the big yellow bikes floating around the forum so when this came up on ebay, I had to have it!

Some beautiful details on the frame, the fast back stays and bridge cut out...

... the fork crown (drilled unfortunately but seeing as I may do the old "fixed road bike" in the future not too bothered)...

Just generally looks great, and interested to see how the 531 ST rides.

I was planning on building it with the Dura Ace from the Sirius, then building the Sirius with the parts from the Orlowski.
I'm tempted though by the idea of some black 75s as I think they'd look great against the yellow, also think this frame is going to be a little stretch for me in the leg department so would be better off trading the 170 DA for 165s anyhow. Will see how it is when built.
Really glad I won this ont bay as I usually get sniped in the dying seconds (:
It's not far off what I'd want in a custom build, aside from I'd prefer a cm shorter seat tube, beggers can't be choosers.
Any of you out there concerned for this classic beauty's future, have no fear, this will be a strictly (ish) non-HHSB build.
Will update when it arrives.
