  • I doubt that this started with Thatcher or ended with Thatcher.

    Incidentally, you could complain.

To the Police Complaints Authority, established in 1985, which Thatcher's government would have been responsible for implementing.

They did a sterling job with Hillsborough, didn't they?

  • I think we're losing sight of the fact that Billy Elliot would not have got his big break in dancing without Maggie Thatcher.

  • Possibly. But then Thatcher cut the arts and culture budget by 75% too so having gone against the grain socially, and endured a difficult home life as a result of his father's harrowing employment troubles to pursue his new found passion, to add insult to injury his career was then stymied before it had a chance to fulfil it's early promise.

    For shame.

  • iron lady... rust in peace

  • Facebook campaign to rename Heathrow after her.

Would like to think it'd be impossibly controversial, but have been to airports named after Georges Best and Bush.

  • Can we name it after her and the close it down?

  • It's not that uncommon for airports to be named after former heads of state/government. Reagan in DC, Saddam Hussein in Baghdad. She's be in good company, really.

(There are some named after non-evil people as well - Pierre Elliot Trudeau in Montreal, Lester B Pearson in Toronto...)

  • If they name it thatcher airport I'm going to go there just to shit.

    Dirty protest ftw.

Horatio in you opinion which side is JFK on?

  • Horatio in you opinion which side is JFK on?

    The other side?

  • At a time when austerity (for the poor) is the watchword, how can anyone justify spending £8 million on her funeral?

I propose we crowd fund it. To set the ball rolling, I've some firelighters that I'm prepared to donate for free.

  • There are some named after non-evil people as well - Pierre Elliot Trudeau in Montreal, Lester B Pearson in Toronto...

    Robin Hood

  • Not evil. He's sitting with Trudeau in my mind, actually. Like JFK, He's not the greatest person in the history of the respective state's politics (see the October Crisis), but was also cool in some other ways (his wife slept with Mick Jagger and he was a personal friend of Castro - in fact, he was a pallbearer at his funeral along with Jimmy Carter, which made it the first time a US president - former or not - and Castro had met since his trip to the UN in 1959, if I'm not mistaken).

  • Robin Hood

    Fictional characters don't count.

  • At a time when austerity (for the poor) is the watchword, how can anyone justify spending £8 million on her funeral?

Maggie's last chance to finally put money into British soil?

That's only 0.12p per person.... compare to the 52p each and every person in the UK spends on "the Queen" each year... and what's she putting into British soil?

  • She owns a lot of horses, and they put something of value into the soil.

  • Her family and friends own most of the soil, and get millions of pounds of subsidies for it.

  • I'd gladly chuck in a couple of quid on top of my 52p if we could have a double funeral.

  • Eat the rich
    Save on internment costs

  • interment?

That's a great article, thanks for linking it.

  • Some Tory wetlip was just on the radio suggesting that the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Sq would be a suitable place for a Thatcher memorial.

I splurted coffee like they do when the act all surprised in the movies. You've seen them, in the movies. Splurting coffee.

  • Can't we just kill the Queen as well, have a big double-funeral, long weekend and a statue of them scissoring on the 4th plinth?

Might have to call bullshit on this, the pallbearer bit. Whose funeral? Castro was not a pallbearer at JFK's funeral (http://www.jfklibrary.org/Research/Research-Aids/Ready-Reference/JFK-Miscellaneous-Information/Pallbearers.aspx), Castro and Carter aren't dead, so no funerals there. I only looked as it sounded such a cool fact, but I don't think it is.

  • Trudeau surely?
