  • Hello,

I'm very new here, I've mainly just been trawling the pages looking for a frame to buy, but on Saturday morning I cycled back from Muswell Hill Bike Jumble Sale at 9am in the morning, in the snow, with my dodgy brakes, with a pink Joe Waugh frame on my back. My friend at barber school (luckyskull) told me that I should start a project thread on here and I've learnt loads from these forums already so I thought I would.

I'm looking to build it up into a solid touring/commuter bike. Basically I want to take him everywhere with me.

I also bought (late 70s?) Shimano 600 front and rear derailleurs, pedals, and north road bars.

I'm just trying to work out all the factors that I need to consider with compatibility and all that stuff to get the rest of the parts and to get building (ideally for the term break coming up)

I guess the first thing I need to get is a wheelset, I'm thinking 700c x 28 with some Marathon Pluses thrown on?

Oh, here's some measurements (according to a clunky tape measure, I'm sure they're slightly off):

    Seat tube: 50cm (c-t)
    Top tube: 53cm (c-c)
    Hub Spacing: 126mm
    Front Forks: 100mm
    BB: 68mm
    Seatpost hole diameter: 27.2mm
    Stem hole : 1"
    Drop (for brakes): 50cm

    stem clamp diameter needed: 23.8mm

  • That's a real nice frame.

  • Thanks! I think so too.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of upgrade this is, here is the most flattering picture there is of my current Raleigh Meteor in better days:

    And now:

  • BB 37mm: if you measure the width of the bottom bracket shell. It will be 68mm wide and UK threading, seeing it is a British made frame.

Seatpost hole(?)28mm: the seat post diameter will be 27.2, maybe 27 as its 531.

Stem hole (?) 24mm: it should take or 1" stem.

I have see the frame, its really nice in the flesh. love the colour! Good luck with the build I look forward to seeing its progress.

  • Cheers Lucky. I've updated with the righterer measurements.

  • I'm not massively fussy but it would be really nice to get downtube shifters to match the front and rear mechs I've got (Shimano 600 6100), a specific ebay search pulls up nothing, so if any of you spot them on your travels give me the nod. They look like this:

  • Shimano arabesque parts are similar and would work nicely too.

  • A couple of 600 group-sets for thought, i personally like the look of the sis(top one). nice and clean lines, simple and about the same age as your frame I should imagine.
I have a 600 tricolour group on my TT bike and a mix of 600tri/sis on my rat daily ride, IMHO they work really well and do the job.

  • Oh, I really like that first one too. I was also thinking of going for clean lines over the admittedly very lovely arabesque.

I think cranks from either the first or second would be very nice, and for brakes I know that I want dual pivot so I'll have to get hold of some wheels first and see what da drop.

In fact, I should probably just get hold of some wheels first.

I have a seatpost! £5 it was. Things are moving, slooooowly.

  • EDIT: New pics.

  • Enjoying the thread!

  • I've sorted a pair of friction shifters: http://i.imgur.com/9IrVTXi.jpg?1

    (from this clearout thread)

I've sorted a an athena wheelset from over here

And I got sum ]nice yellow cable housing:

Once I get my wheels I'll be trying to work out what chain and chainrings to buy (I want to buy them new) and then the bottom bracket and crank. (is it called the drivetrain?). I might need some advice on compatibility and the like.

I'm also going to start a wanted thread for all my bits and bobs which I'll link to this thread.

  • Wanted thread: http://www.lfgss.com/thread103989.html#post3503993

It's very short because I'm still a bit unsure as to exactly what I need.

What I do want is those pins that go in the back of the drop outs, you can see the holes here:

    What are they called?

  • Drop out adjusters, probably Campagnolo ones,

  • cheers!

  • arrrrrrrgg. So, I'm definitely still getting the wheels, but I've just been advised that the campag freehub won't take a shimano cassette (which will be compatible with my front n rear mechs).

Does anyone have any wisdom? (I don't think I'll be going indexed but I wouldn't like to rule out the future possibility.)

  • if you buy campag indexed shifters the same speed as your campag free-hub (example: seven speed shifters with seven speed hub). it will not matter if the front or rear mechs are shimano or campag. it will work fine, but it will be a mix of Japanese and Italian parts, not that its really an issue.

and it wont matter one bit if your using a friction shifter....

did you not want a braze-on mounted shifter rather than a clamp on one?

  • did you not want a braze-on mounted shifter rather than a clamp on one?

Um, wasn't aware that there were two types, until now. Do I need a mounted shifter because of me nobbly bits?

    SO. MUCH. TO. LEARN.

  • (thanks for the advice, though, really informative)

  • yes, those nobbly bits are for shifters like this.

  • Those shifters are making me blush.

Will the clamp-on ones work? Or will I have to keep them for another project/sell them on?

  • they will work, but the braze-ons are designed for the type above......

  • .....and seeing that you are using north road bars, you could get cable stops that screw into the braze-on shifter mounts and run a bar end shifter.

  • Bar end shifters would be very tempting if I could find them for a reasonable price. I now have index-compatible gear cable so I could go indexed if I wanted to.

What would I have to take into consideration? I would probably get a 6 or 7 speed block, so would I then have to get a Campagnolo 6/7 speed bar-end shifters? Are they always indexed shifters? What diameter do your bars have to be to fit them?

  • Carbon fibre drinks holder?
