  • lugged crown fork cost more and longer to make than the unicrown on the cheaper model.

  • Ti is getting full carbon rather than steel though. Or am I missing something obvious?

  • Jesus, that's put cat among pigeons!
Hoping my Soma turns up now. Why can't life be easier. Steel, carbon back to steel, make yer fookin minds up Genesis!

  • It's no good, guess you have to get a Brain Rourke then, it's the only way.

  • At this rate, you may be right!

  • Heh. I'm getting anxious that they're going back to steel because they discovered the carbon ones were prone to sudden, explosive failure.

  • Found a steel that is right length, Surly Straggler a-c 400mm.

  • @spotter, sorry for foisting my indeciveness on yer thread. It's cleared a few things up for me. Unfortunately my mind not being one of them.
    ;-)

  • Ha! Pretty much what Ed said in regards to carbon forks and clearances. It's also easy to hang as many braze-ons as you want off a steel fork too. They'll be an aftermarket carbon fork of the same dimensions (smaller clearances, fewer braze-ons) for those that absolutely need the carbon fork. Carbon's carbon, steel's steel. Each have their own pros and cons and will appeal to different folks who have different usages of the bike in mind. There's no right or wrong.

  • Albs, would the steel fork be available after market? From the way you write, I guess you work at Genesis/Madison?

  • No, I work for Genesis, @Alb just ad libbing what I was saying.

    #pleasegivemeajob

  • I just discovered that using this bike for Cyclocross has killed the bottom bracket (which has done well considering its a 5 year old gxp) and possibly the wheel bearings.

Not sure how I feel about this.

  • Jack

I have destroyed a gxp BB on my fixie skidder which has not seen offroad duties. Given how cheap external BBs are I would not be too excited and as yours was 5 years old it has done pretty well.

  • ^ Yeah I fucked a GXP BB on my Vig in under 12 months, also never been off road.

  • I killed a BB in 86 miles (last years Ride100), they are consumable items, as annoying as that might be.

  • I was more wondering if it was a signal that I should get a CX bike next...

  • Not really. It's a signal you should get a new bottom bracket!

  • Luckily I've got a spare one so i'll get that on this weekend.. should probably clean it at the same time.

  • <Not sure how I feel about this.

    With emotion I would guess.

  • Genesis has had a mini service this week:

    • Front wheel has had new stainless bearings
I suspect that a combination of front loading and cyclocross killed it off.

    • New bottom bracket
Again cyclocross had its part to play in its demise. I've now gone from the old style GXP:

    To the new one:

Which i'm told has better seals so hopefully it'll last a bit longer.

    • I've ditched my lizard skins in favour of some lifeline professional tape:

Which I'm hoping will last a bit better, as the LS stuff had got totally flat and worn though.

    • I also got some new double tap hoods, the newer ones that have a nice grippy textured finished as opposed to my old slippery when wet ones.

    • Finally I've did a quick bit of #modz today with my Paul Gino light mount at lunch today. Previously it was just on the side of my rack:

Which left the light and mount rather exposed to getting bumped or knocked on things.

    So I knocked this up:

The light now sits in board and below my rack, in a much more pleasing position. Will have to test with panniers, but the job of this is i can easily pull it up a bit for flower clearance.

  • The eagle eyed among you will notice that my light has changed colour. Thats because some little shits on BMX's stole it whilst I was touring the lake district.

  • I reckon your next step is a dynamo light.

  • quite correct.

I'm thinking Rival 22 with full hydraulics, dynamo hub with USB charging, and possibly even 650b so I can run 45c.

But that won't be for at least a year

  • What a lovely bicycle!
What front rack are you using?

  • The Dynamo can wait as the day getting longer, the SRAM brakeset is still expensive (even compare to shimano) but you can buy a front rival 22 and buy the back another time when fund allow it.

Best to my knowledge you can run your existing 10spd groupset with the 22, as they have the same cable pull, meaning no need to buy everything (rival 22 is cheaper than the 10spd hydraulic levers oddly enough).

As for 650b, may have a wheelset to sell as I'm upgrading the rear to the Pacenti rims to match the front.
