  • great job, stunning!

    mudguards?

  • Nooooo, no mudguards on the Hetchins. My next classic bike project will be the one with mudguards - Dawes Galaxy with 600 Arabesque and GB mudguards.

  • Bruemel mudguard.

    Are these made in Japan?

  • absolutely beautiful that. really lovely restoration.

  • Ah, come on - this neeeeeeds red bluemels!
Would be such a great finishing touch, and the clearances look oddly big at the moment.

  • Stunning!

  • It is your bike, but i think it would look (extra)class with mudguards. It is designed to take them after all.......

I would say something like the aluminium Tour De France would look amazing......

Or the Olympics in silver or red......Some on ebay BIN £25 at the moment.

  • agree silver mudguards not red or black

    chrome even better!

  • I'd go with chrome or red.
Aren't there some more solid-colour looking red bluemels?
(as opposed to red anodised looking, like them up thar)

  • like these:

  • Hmmm, I suppose if I'm getting some SS GB mudguards for the Dawes anyway, I might as well see if they fit and what they look like on the Hetchins.

Probably take them off again, but it might be worth a go.

  • It's a British bicycle, no such thing as predictable weather here.

I really don't understand the British resistant to mudguard despite living in a country where we benefit from it.

  • can i ask from whom are you getting the GB mudguards?

  • Me? SJS, they have a limited number of them, but can special order other version, like the 650B one.

  • Any guidance on what width to go for with 32c tyres? Given that 40>32, my starting point would be that the 40mm ones would be wide enough, but this suggests that 50mm would be required. 50mm would be a bit chunky for my tastes.

  • 50mm would be idea, 40mm might be a bit of a tight fit (I have a 45mm mudguard that just about fit with 33.3c tyres).

50mm doesn't sound as big as it sounded, plus the GB SS guard weight as much as the SKS Chromoplastic.

  • Hmmm, 50mm it is then. How 'long' are the long GB mudguards? Can't seem to find any photos showing the difference between the long and the short versions.

  • long - more coverage on the rear of each mudguard to reduced wear and tear to drivetrain and wet feet.

  • Hmmmmm, La Cycliste seems unimpressed by the idea of mudguards on the Hetchins - 'Mudguards? Nooooo. Hoo hoo hoo'. Feh, it's my bike.

  • It's your bike (and bum) in the end.

  • will La Cycliste clean the mud off that nice paintwork for you?

  • Three words:

    Mudguards my arse.

  • Hah! As if. When we got back from the Pendle Witches I was under strict instructions to clean any road salt off her Roberts.

  • Hmmm, looks like no mudguards on the Hetchins - not enough clearance with the Record calipers to fit a 50mm GB mudguard. And La Cycliste is increasingly scornful of the idea. Back to plan A.
