  • depends what you want from them...
they'll be totally fine for riding around town and they'll look great with the classic frame / fancy lugs.

  • Well just rising around town and rides every Wednesday with other guys. And when I go down south to see family in Bournemouth might take it on the velodrome :-)

  • How good would people say Andel cranks are then :-)

Better than Miche :-) but not as good as 75's/DA/omniums that would cost you £90 more so for a classic frame these* would be my budget choice.

    *andel

  • Ahh thanks for the advise guys il see where I can get them and prices.

  • Better than Miche :-) but not as good as omniums that would cost you £90 more so for a classic frame these* would be my budget choice.

    fixed.

75/DA are square taper, same ol' shit regardless of the price.

  • Have had a couple of andel 'classic' cranks and they are grand, I had some on a daily ride for over a year and they are still going strong

  • fixed.

75/DA are square taper, same ol' shit regardless of the price.

Are you really saying that Miche and create cranks are on the same level as DA or 75 cranks?

  • He's not. He's saying that Andel and DA/75 are on a par, but better than Miche.

  • No, look he removed them from the list of what would be better cranks.

  • Possibly.
    Scobled

  • Are you really saying that Miche and create cranks are on the same level as DA or 75 cranks?

Quality wise? DA/75 is better, but ultimately being square taper, really isn't any difference when it come to performance.

  • No idea about Create cranks, wasn't it's usually the BB that's the fault in those Create?

  • That's pretty debatable then, you can talk about stiffness, weight and strength for performance too, I highly doubt miche would be as stiff or fast as something like a sugino grand mighty chainset.

  • Right decided on getting it painted dark purple with white decals. I know it's not the original but i think it would look quite cool. Should be going to be painted and lacquered on Friday then I can put the head set in and order the bb and crank for this month.

  • That's pretty debatable then, you can talk about stiffness, weight and strength for performance too, I highly doubt miche would be as stiff or fast as something like a sugino grand mighty chainset.

And I highly doubt you'd notice the slightest difference in stiffness of both those cranks.

  • No but would I notice the difference between a pre cursa and a seta enough to justify the extra £400? No but...

  • You're talking about a frame you muppet, of course you'll feel a slight difference.

  • No but would I notice the difference between a pre cursa and a seta enough to justify the extra £400? No but...

Why encourage someone to spank all their money on a load of baubles?
DA's / 75's might get soserious to work a fraction of a second faster, but they will cost him a small fortune and (imho) won't suit the frame.

With this in mind, I gave this project some thought over the weekend, and came up with the following build spec.... These bits are all readily available, and cheap enough to buy new (I expect they could be found for super cheap second hand if you had the time to hunt)...
They will work reliably well, will look "correct" with the fancy lugs / biggish clearances / general retro path racer vibe of the frame, and should build into a sensible, functional, good-looking fixed run around.

Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to share this with the class and see what happened. I probably need to start a project of my own again!

Andel chainset, plus whatever bb works - presume Shimano will do one.
    tange headset,
formula hubs, open sport rims, panarcer paselas
Kalloy fluted seatpost (or something nicer but used)
kalloy stem (or something nicer but used)
    drops / risers / whatever
Used Brooks / Rolls / whatever
    Cloth tape / whatever

    etc etc.

Like I said, just thinking out loud.

  • ^+1. Looks almost exactly like my first build, with which I was very happy.

  • Not telling him to get those instead of Andel, I just got caught up in trying to dissuade him from Miche.

  • Thanks for the parts list Gaz. Not sure as to how old school I want it to look now as iv already got a oldish looking raleigh. Finished emailing the guys at swinnerton bikes and its a late 70's 531 frame so il be ordering the decals soon

  • Not being funny but those parts listed above will make it look crap..

  • ha , fair enough! that list is basically just to make it look "classic", by which I basically mean safe... i guess you have to figure what kind of look / feel you want to go for and then start deciding on the parts list. The "hhsb" list will look very different, and the "actual entry-level track bike" different again.

Either way, here's a couple of photos to help defend my idea (still not saying he should go for this, it's just a suggestion for the classic-look-on-a-budget-idea)

  • Not being funny but those parts listed above will make it look crap..

No it wouldn't, it'll look fine.

  • At the end of the day the looks aint the most important thing.... Most important thing is that I enjoy my first ever fixed geard bike lol
