After another set of track wheels, due to having a number of flats in the last week.
I was going to go for another set of Planet X tubulars as they are pretty strong and at £130 are a bargin but they have an offer on these and they could be used for racing in future, any thoughts from thoswe more informed?
£360 for carbon: http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/WPPXPCT8282/planet_x_pro_carbon_82_82_track_wheelset
Cheap model A's: http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/WPPXMODELA/planet_x_model_a_tubular_wheels_(pair)
Or maybe the V Sprint ones as an alternative to both: http://www.v-sprintwheels.com/pages/track-wheels-alloy-pro.html

Check the weight limit on the Pxs. You might be surprised (and £360 better off).
I nearly got some of the rims until I was told the weight limit was 80kg :-/Clinchers for training, and save up for a 2nd hand Corima or ffwd disc, plus something sensible for the front (Zipp deep section or ffwd 5 spoke). Don't waste money on another set of halfway house wheels.

Weight limit is 80kg for those rims?! Errrr shit.
-
• #81
Are you sure about that?
-
• #82
Nope. But the bloke that told me was.
That's why I say check! With PX (if they even really know). -
• #83
Cheers Rob, at 101kg I think they're a no go.

I have emailed them to find out. Will report back here.

Weight limit is 100kg for the 50mm carbon tubs.
FYI - don't bother emailing or calling px with questions- just @ them on twitter..

re: carbon wheels
I think the best thing to do is shed some body weight. the heaviest elite international sprinters are 95kg max. I need to drop at least 10kg myself, but if youre serious about racing you should upgrade your body first, bike 2nd.

I agree with your sentiment Colm, but some of these guys are very tall and not particularly overweight.
Elite riders are a tough benchmark for amateurs who haven't had the same training history and are unlikely to have the genetic ability coupled with a full time training lifestyle to shape their physique in the same way. It's an understandable comparison, but unrealistic.I'm not sure how many elites are the same height as Paul, maybe that Spanish guy only and I bet he's more than 95kg!
I have no excuse, I'm fat and old and need to drop 5kg.

Im 6ft 3 myself, I think 10% bodyfat is achievable for me. I had 4% at age 16 but was very skinny and a basketball player!
the Spanish guy looks big but dont remember seeing anyone over 100kg when I looked at the rider stats for last olympics. think his mechanic overtightened the seatpost bolts rather than his weight that caused the saddle to break off, was watching the London Oly flying 200's again last night, he was lucky not to crash!
Its either Farsports or Hongfu that list their 88mm rims for 115kg riders, the 60mm are rated for 105kg.

Usually I would agree, many could go much faster if they only lost the 'aunt nelly'. That's not an issue for me, luckily, I'm rather tall at 6"5. I'm broad, which I think is mainly from deadlifting as I never do specific back or arm exercises. My aim is to lose some of the upper body size, not only to be lighter but more aerodynamic too.

I'm working on losing the extra baggage! 8 kilos lighter than I was this time last year so happy with that. Plenty more left to come off though, especially as I'm not especially tall (~6ft).
The 100kg limit was never going to bother me, 80kg on the other hand!
I'm only buying the wheels as I got offered them and tubs for the price of a good training wheelset, I'm not fast enough to justify owning them, yet... But hopefully I will be by this time next year. -

The most accurate test for BF is called Hydrodensitometry and it's most frequently used for athletes, other than that calipers if used by someone that knows what they are doing are reasonably accurate , however throwing around that number I doubt you had either test . The most elite professional bodybuilders are able to achieve the lowest bodyfat known which is around 3%, this is attainable for a very few of them and can only be maintained for a matter of hours and as is well documented can often result in death .
Take it to a proper independent local bike shop, just for the principle if anything else.
