  • I changed my bull horns to drops given it said bull horns weren't allowed. I was on a black 1984 Fuji. Next year I'm planning to ride a more sensible bike. Riding the FG made me feel like guys who run the marathon as rhinos... But enjoyed the positive comments from everyone on the ride.

  • I've just bought a couple, along with some carb-drink, I'll give this "replacing energy as you go" lark a trial on ROTFL.

  • ROTFL, now that's a great ride.

Like the idea of the squeezy above, but probably sticking with the spare ziplock back to stick wrappers in.

  • Any idea when entry opens for ROTFL?

  • Was just looking, and last year entries opened on 30 Aug. Assume will be similar.

  • FWIW, my stream-of-conscious account of RLS100S:

    http://www.troisv.cc/2013/08/ride-london-surrey-100-sportive-putting.html

  • excuse my ignorance, but what is ROTFL?

also, I think I am one of those that over hydrated...maybe. I don't see how you can ride at the pace for that long on two bottles!! I must have drunk about 5 litres worth over the day, if not more.

I need to read more about nutrition...oh, and train more...a lot more...

  • ride of the fallen leave, rather than roll over the fucking levees.

  • Gels and littering

these cost £4 - load them up with gels before the ride [ they take about 5 gels worth]

you don't have to consume a whole gel in one go, you can ingest smaller amounts. No empty wrappers, no sticky pockets - nice clean countryside and they're reusable

Good idea. There's also some good gel recipes online that work out WAY cheaper than buying gels which would work well with this setup.

  • Ride of the Fallen Leaf? Sounds mystical. I like it.

I trying to decide if the Ride 100 is for me next year! Was a great experience, but I have done it now! Although breaking 5 hours would be good.

The guy with horns had spotted the rule the night before but as it was too late to do anything about it he chanced it, no-one was doing any checks on bikes so he got away with it. I switched to drops and slung on a back brake too, didn't want to chance getting up at stupid o'clock on a Sunday just to be told I couldn't ride my setup.

The Rhino thing is a good analogy, tho maybe a bit over the top, probably more like running a marathon in clown shoes. The support from other riders was great, especially an Aussie bloke called Jez (I think) who was really enthusiastic in his praise, really lifted my spirits at a point, somewhere near Kingston I think, where I was really fighting the urge to walk my bike to the nearest cab office.

  • ^^ What reason did they give for not allowing bull-horns? (Not UCI compliant?!)

  • Probably largely due to excluding TT bicycle.

  • They didn't give a reason but it's quite standard in sporifs apparently, tribars etc. also not allowed, as someone up thread put it "they're a bit stabby if there is an accident".

  • Hah, while there's rider whose bicycle don't have bar-end plug...

  • there may have been, just like there were riders with bullhorns, but both were explicitly disallowed.

  • There's also some good gel recipes online that work out WAY cheaper than buying gels which would work well with this setup.

Jellybabies + pinch of salt + blender?

  • Not quite. The one I was impressed with but failed to convince my gf to make was from this page: http://www.summitpost.org/home-made-power-gels-energy-for-less/239378

  • I know, I know, too much time on my hands and only people on bikeradar really care anyway

  • oh, and excel doesn't work, so that's a fail alround

  • Copy it from Excel then paste it into Notepad, that'll strip all the formatting out, then paste it into the post.

Obviously losing all the formatting might be a problem, however.

  • I think that's more or less what mjs has put on his chart...

I wasn't very good at stats at school, but here are the finish times by % and number (to quarter of an hour). I've combined the male and female times.

  • Congratulations. That's fast.

Please tell me it wasn't a solo effort.

I was lucky enough to pick up a three man Dulwich Paragon train very early and I then rode with them almost the entire way.

Shot of me leading out the group on Whitehall:

The guy behind me - Chris Zappala - did a huge amount of pace making which kept the speed high, he deserves a lot of credit.
