I understand that bullhorns are a no no, but anyone know if they have rules about having a back brake if running fixed?
thanks for the heads up. was planning on riding my fixed bike with bullhorns so will have to opt for the road bike instead

Couldn't get an answer re. back brake so I'm slinging one on anyway (as I'm switching the bars already it's no big deal). Would be a massive pisser to get to the start and be told you're not allowed to ride.

I can find no mention of the legality of my Victorian diving suit costume, hopefully that's fine.
It's a bit hard to see anything through the portholes in the brass helmet, but I reckon starting at 6 there shouldn't be many other riders to run into.

Please note that you are not permitted to use the
following items during the sportive:- any artificial or mechanical aid (including without limitation handcranked devices).
- any pets or animals.
- any unconventional handlebars, including triathlon bars, aero bars, clip-ons, prayer bars, Spinaci bars and cow bars.
- bars without bar-end plugs fitted.
- mobile phones while cycling – you must pull to the roadside and stop if you wish to make/receive a phone call.
- any other item that could potentially inhibit the flow or safety of other participants or which we, in our reasonable opinion, deem may cause danger or risk of danger to you or other participants.
I suspect the last one could be used to cover things like (lack of) brakes. they should ban strava too.
- any artificial or mechanical aid (including without limitation handcranked devices).

Have lost my registration letter, has anyone tried blagging it at the desk? Going down at lunchtime to avoid out of London rush
-

They have a "helpdesk" section there that seemed to be dealing with those sort of problems.

Still considering dressing as a pirate, London Marathon style. Suspect most others in fancy dress will be going as Wiggins or Froom.

I'm riding from blackheath to the O2 and through the blackwall tunnel.

Any ideas regarding the chances of getting away with turning up on Sunday with someone else's registration?
They're gonna do the registering at Excel tomorrow. Do you still need to have photo ID on the day?
-
• #262
No idea. Worth a try, what's the worst that could happen?

Without realising they're in fancy dress.

Thinking about it, if they felt the need to spread registration over 3 days I can't imagine they will have the time in the 2 hour departure window to do the same in-depth (sign there and glance at your id) checks they did at excel.

I reckon I you have the official numbers on bike, lid and jersey you'll be fine

Are helmets mandatory? I don't have one that matches my Cannondale! -
• #267
There is pretty strong wording on the rider registration form about not substituting riders. I suppose this is for insurance purposes, up to you if you and the person who is giving you the number feel okay about it.
Edit: Helments definitely mandatory.

Does anyone know of any smartphone apps where friends will be able to track my progress so they know when to look out for me on the ride?
-
• #269
Most smartphones would go flat before you finish I reckon

I've just gone from excited! to nervous! again...
I probably shouldn't have wandered over to BR...I apologise in advance to any dickheads I obstruct on their mission for personal bests.
they also seemed to think a rather wide range of gears is required... that's not true is it? sub-40 chainrings? it's only surrey. -

I do have a battery that contains 3 charges worth of power to plug in to my phone?
-
• #272
If you knew roughly where they were gonna be you wouldn't need it on the whole time.
Doesn't google latitude do that sort of thing? Dunno if it will constantly update though.
