A starling or a humble sparrow, although less dramatic, would be sadder - I don't think green woodpeckers are endangered.

No neither. I'm not an expert but I thought both (and other) "common" birds were endangered - numbers have dropped dramatically in a short space of time. Whereas woodpecker may be less common but more stable population. Very happy to be wrong on this though, I do love sparrows.
