  • Does anyone else cat suffer with nystagmus? (Unintentional eye movement)
Fleur was recently in for a teeth cleaning but the vet noticed her eyes never really stop moving, it’s a tiny amount which we’d never noticed or just put down to her being generally nervous.

It can be a symptom of neurological disorders or cancer/legions.

It also happens to be a completely harmless quirk found in cats with Siamese/Persian genes.

So yesterday involved an incredibly expensive consultation with one of only a handful of people in the uk capable of diagnosing it. Longest road trip Fleur has ever had since we adopted her going all the way to Cambridge.
Poor sausage cried the whole way there.

After lots of behavioural/reaction tests the two vets have concluded it’s almost certainly the benign version of the condition and at this point didn’t warrant a CT scan or anything more invasive at this stage but we’re now on the look out for wobbles, missed jumps and random head tilting.

Stressful week, made more odd by the fact that other than that Fleur appears to be in the best shape of her life for a 9yr old!

She’s back to being a noisy demanding little princess now…

TL:DR — glad we have insurance.

  • I am ok with our cats having reasonable amounts of fluff though. Spring must be one big hair party with a cat like this.

  • Loads of really good cat pictures the last pages, thanks!

@edmundro we were the caretakers of a cat with autoimmune disease. The first something is wrong vet visits, including a car trip with constant crying cat, and then at first unclear diagnosis and expenses were so stressful.

  • We have a cat on the way! Saw them all earlier this afternoon and although they are all incredibly sweet we’ve gone for the calmer cat who is also happy to be fussed. Only real issue is losing a bit of weight. Collecting her on Saturday, fingers crossed.

  • Enjoy. It's awesome. Lazy boy here confirms

  • Lol, Fleur has always lost her shit on the way to the vets, it’s usually 5mins away.
    This was 2hrs!

She was super chilled and slept a bit on the way home.

We know what to look for in future if anything changes but for now the specialists seemed perfectly happy.

  • Can I have my hand back please?

  • Sup all.

So we've taken the big step to adopt a cat (few weeks away). As a new cat parents, can I please ask what the hive mind says should we get to make a happy cat home? I'll probably have loads of questions as the weeks go by.
So... Littler box? Thinking Teflon stainless steel litter box with clumping litter? Which kind is recommended?

We'll be getting tree, wall hammocks and things for the living room for when we're in the living space. And same for around my office space.

Last time I had a cat/s was in SA as a young child where they were outside cats and very independent. I'm not sure of an indoor cat or one that may like human contact.

I'll start reading through the thread (don't stress) so 530pgs here we come!

BTW, some great pics of kits.

  • In the end a lot of it depends on your cat, as (you will be aware) they're not all the same..

The main thing about litter boxes is you have to keep them clean or they'll go elsewhere, so either need to scoop out the clumpy stuff regularly or get an automatic cat pooping machine for £749.

Some cats can be "trained" to actually use scratching posts instead of your sofa etc. - it's worth a shot.
    Ours didn't like hammocks.
Comfy (warm!) chill areas are always a hit, some say cats enjoy dark blue stuff there (blankets etc.)

If you have time and money I'd really suggest building / buying some cool cat furniture so they can walk / climb around the flat!

  • After 8 years of daily scooping, we sprung for the expensive poop spaceship and never looked back. It’s been worth every penny so far…

  • I did look at the fancy robotic ones before my OH said to not be ridiculous

Ahead of Saturday we've not gone too flush as CHAT have said she's a pretty chilled/low maintenance cat who does like a little bit of play if encouraged; for now it's just a scratching board with some toy balls in there, some catnip soft toys, a laser pen and some more soft/bouncy balls she can mess around with if she wants

  • I hope she's OK after her road trip dramas!

  • cheers for the info!

Ive heard mixed responses on the auto cat box... cant decide whether im in or out... I want to believe. Are there any where i would need to press a button rather than have sensors to activate on their departure?

We're planning some hammocks above the sofa so he can be part of the family while looking down on us. Couple beds, couple trees.

My partner is much more reserved on what is and isnt going to happen. Im threatening on a cat Union to get more things (jokes obvs)

  • 2 hours is long, but good that you got help.
Knowing what signs to look for is so important.

  • The one linked above...

Worth every penny (imo) if you have an indoor cat.

  • not helping

  • How did you teach them to solve a Rubik's cube? Mine have just got the hang of a 500pc jigsaw but I'm struggling to progress.

  • the trickiest part was grafting thumbs onto their paws so they could hold the thing

  • Kipper marked the toaster (again - different toaster obvs) yesterday, the stench of lightly toasted cat piss is quite horrific.

She has a real thing about marking on our kitchen worktop, I think she gets stressed by neighbouring cats so just marks her territory.

  • Do you still need to fill it with litter I assume. How long does it last
    ?
