There are quite some cats in shelters waiting for someone to get them out.
Our shelter cat is great. (Ok, not a maine coon).

Don’t tell a breeder you plan to let them roam.
They are indoors cats according to some breeders.
( we don’t let ours know they go outside) I would send you her details but she is winding down.
But look for Maine coon rescue / rehome and you will find some . -

Just had to march this dickhead in. My neighbour has 3 massive dogs and their back gate is slightly broken so you can see them. Waily decided it was a great idea to torment the huge dogs by whacking them through the hole in the gate. It appears that the thug life is tiring.

The gate has broken before and they've escaped so he's walking on thin ice.

This little shit disappeared for three hours yesterday morning. He went over the Colonies wall and came back into a different terrace. Was found cowering in someone's garden soaking wet and covered in mud.
Grounded!

Looking for a bit of advice
Saw a ginger tabby on our walk this morning around an estate. Can't determine how old he was but old enough to have a few issues. He has scabs all over his back, rather skinny, his legs were very dirty and had a lump of some kind around his mouth. He had a collar on with phone number.
Was incredibly friendly and even followed us for quite a bit. We don't think they're lost but get the feeling they've been very neglected. What's the best way of approaching it? I get the feeling that calling up a charity might be the best welfare call - don't really want to call or text the number and get a 'none of your business' earful...

Maybe I've watched too many movies but you could call and withhold your number. Ask if they've lost a cat, if they say no, hang up.
Otherwise take it to a vet I'd say -

Our new kitten, Lyra, and the old man of the house, Sushi, seem to have finally made friends.

Thats very reassuring. TBH while any cat i get will start out indoors, inevitably they'll expand in to the Garden at least. Suppose the next stage is to find a decent breeder. Last cat i got was from a guy a friend met who'd had a litter and had one male left no one would take. Pure serendipity.
