My man, you need to ditch the girlfriend. Once this honey's on the road the ladies will be all over you like batter to a sausage. You'll be Casanova on two wheels; the Marquis de Sade of Peckham, or wherever you do your orgies and brilliant thinking. Mad bike, safe attitude. Approved.

You need to count the number of gears you have at the front, and the number at the back, and add the two numbers together. If it is an odd number you will have found out what has happened to that missing number 2 cog. When you find it, you can use it to lever out the chain. If the sums don't add up, use a chain whip to "persuade" the little fella to come out.

^^^ uh, wha?

Definately not sure if serious.

Don't remove the oil. Add talcum powder to form a cheap removal paste. It's basically what all the top tdf mechanics use to release seized parts.

but if it's really stuck you can use this as a last resort:

Chain out, used bolt croppers to cut the ring and chain. Now i need a new crank set, oh well. At least the oil was dried off so I was kept clean.

The stock cranks are shite anyway, no big loss. You will also be wanting a BB, go for the shimano sealed unit.

I though I would go for a Chris King bottom bracket. Theyre expensive i know but what you cant see cant hurt you.

• #61
good choice, they work well with some track cranks (espresso etc)

You can re-use a wheel hub as a bottom bracket. If you go to Iggle, they have a triple pack - one for each wheel and one for the crankset. But put it in the other way around, left side on the right hand side. As you pedal, and your wheels go round (and round) there can be a problem if they are all "spinning" the same way.

The technique of using a triple set like this, but with an inverted middle axle (as they call it) was something I learned when I was in Vietnam. A lot of people there ride bikes.

Sound advice

Ignore those, they're codswallop. For this build you need a BB from his diffusion range Khris Cing. They're all the rage with celebrity cyclists like Wok Gan and Pat Butcher off the telly. For your shape a 32" inside leg should do it, creased not greased. Anyone who advises grease is pulling your knicker elastic. Don't forget to show an expression of deep concentration when you install it - bieks is science lad.

I am pretty sure that TheorySwine is pulling your leg here. The stuff he is going on about is not even available in this country, not without a doctor's certificate, and you need to go to college for like five years to get one of those.

^^ Andrew, some of us are trying to learn about bike building and that's really distracting.

I know I know. I was like this at school. Laughing at the way the sun behind him shone through my teacher's prominent ears making them glow fleshy orange when I should have been paying attention.
Thanks Ncj, although not sure it will make the most difference. I doubt Ill go faster than 40kmph and the drag at that speed is slim to none.
So......
Been sipping a beer tonight and taking apart the Ralleigh but stumbled upon this little problem. How to get the chain out when it's stuck...between gears 1 and 3 i've tried both fairy liquid and oil but niether are shifting this stuborn little guy!!!
I'm gonna get the gf's hair dryer out to dry off the oil and fairy liquid but then I'm at a lose end...any help?
