The problem we have in Britain is that because we ride on the left side of the road, that mean our drivetrain aren't visible for the other cyclists to observe and ridicule, and thus forcing them to socialised with others, which is why bicycle photography have evolved in making sure that it's taken on the driveside rather.

Waiting for Mercian to confirm that this is one of theirs, then I'll be joining your elite club.

-
• #159

https://www.lfgss.com/thread81285.html
not a Merciansomeone's being a naughty boy
-

I was curious about it's origins. The lugs are insane.
So he was asking too much but now he's put it up for 99p start.
He obviously knows no one in the forum community is having any of it -
• #161
I don't think it's Ernest selling it now
knowing him he'd say it wasn't a Mercian -
• #162
Oh no he does say it's not a Mercian on here. What a scally.

Oh and I'm still looking for a KOM to the spec I want but I am in email convo with the owner of a very nice specimen indeed.
Just trying to negotiate a price. Fingers crossed. -

I am not sure if anyone would buy from him with a feedback of "2". Even if i wanted the frame I would think twice about it

I also grew up in Derbyshire, therefore have always been jealous of Mercian owners, and spent many an hour playing on the frame building part of their website. BUT FINALLY I have just bought this from Hilary Stone.
http://www.hilarystone.com/images/sale%20images/frames/Mercian-1970s.jpg
I'm slightly giddy at the thought of getting it re-sprayed and build it up as a single speed.
I posted this a while back, and today was the joyful day of taking it to Mercian themselves to get it re-done. A berry purple pearl with gold gothic decals and a steel 'world over' head badge.
My dream of having a Mercian of my own (that I could afford) was swiftly shattered when the guy at Mercian told me it wasn't a Mercian frame. The frame number was wrong, where the drop outs connected to the frame weren't quite right and the wrap around seat stem wasn't quite right either. I am GUTTED. I will be informing Hilary Stone of this and hopefully getting a full refund. I have one last hope that it was one of their old frame builder's and Mercian are going to try and track him down and ask him. But it's not looking hopeful. I've been saving for months for this and now I'm back to square one. Totally gutted. -

Sorry to read that.. The wrap-around seat stays and the lugs remind me of a 1970's Holdsworth that I once owned. It's not a bad looking frame, but clearly not what you wanted.
-
• #169
That sucks massive balls. Sorry to hear that.
Youll get that dream frame soon enough. -
• #170
That fork doesn't look original either, look far too modern compare to the rest of the frame.
The brake bridge is very usual and the frame itself look great bar the fork.
-
• #171
I think the fork is legit. It's a Cinelli sloping fork crown. Quite common on quality frames in the 70's. It's not a unicrown, even though it looks like one.
-
• #172
Quick Googling says those fork crown exist quite possibly in the 50's.
Paint doesn't even match.

Really thinking of going for that plum and white Vincitori on Ebay, but the descriptions a bit thin and those ergo's don't look 8 speed - maybe being too cautious ? Deep sections out of character too - wathcha think ?

Looks nice to me. You can always change the wheels as they are a bit out of character. Frame and forks are lovely though.

Still yet to see a Mercian that I dislike......!
