• I don't know anything about Trainerroad but what's the point basing all your training zones on a value that will change over the season and not updating that value when it does?

Remember you can update it based on rides other than formal FTP tests. See 7 Deadly Sins article. http://alex-cycle.blogspot.co.uk/2008/05/the-seven-deadly-sins.html

  • This is where training peaks shines. Easy to check 20min best etc, and even sends an Email if you set a New 20min record. For some reason I like the threshold Power notifications. They feel like kudos. Yet the threshold HR emails are simply a doctors note allowing to og and suffer more.

Sounds like TrainerRoad have based the plan on a the use of an initial FTP, and then ramping TSS. Which makes Skinnys answer far more logical than mine. I'd still want to squeeze a test in each month. But thats just MHO.

  • You need to retest. TSS is a function of duration and intensity (which seems to put more emphasis on duration) and intensity is aligned to FTP. If your FTP has risen you will be achieving a falsely high TSS.

An early indication of FTP shift is when your HR is lower for a given power zone.

  • The plan is quite a short one (8 weeks), so is really more of a block of build in reality. The IF of the sessions does increase slightly, as does the duration of the efforts week on week.

I could re test after the easy fourth week I suppose, as I should be fresher.

  • Whichplan are you using Tom? I no longer use TR but if this seems to be working for you then i may look into it. Does it come as part of the subscription cost to TR or extra?

  • It's part of the subscription.

The one I'm doing is the Century plan, which is basically a good mix of sweet spot, threshold and Vo2 max work.

I'm not sure if it's going to work, but will see in 6 weeks time.

  • The answer is of course 'test it' and 'everyone is different' but I can't test from my desk and this is purely out of interest...

What are peoples FTP results and subsequent 4/6/8 etc. minute power figures?
Is there a chart that exists to predict these?

  • Anyone have any insight into the relative accuracy of the Normalized Power calculations from Training Peaks vs Garmin Connect. For Sunday's race they give me the same average power but vary in NP by 15%.

  • Do you have Auto Pause or Smart Recording enabled, rather than 1s recording?

  • Also, check for any 'include zeros when averaging' type settings that might be different in the two sites.

  • 5sec:839
    30s:592
    1min:461
    2min: 347
    5min: 331
    10min:291
    20min:283

    FTP: ~260

Basically a sharp drop from 5s to 2min and then a fairly even gradual decline (on a log x axis)
As you can see, I am no sprinter..

  • Don't do yourself a disservice @danb, you'd be able to cook your toast for Sunday if you started now. ;)

  • 5s: 711
    30s: 478
    1min: 410
    2min: 330
    5min: 280
    20min: 271
    60min: 263
    4 hours: 223

But anything shorter than 20 minutes isn't from a max effort.

  • mmmm lightly warmed bread. I guess by then it would have gone stale and therefore slightly crispy :P

  • 5sec:1096
    30s:702
    1min:495
    2min: 405
    5min: 377
    10min:345
    20min:339

FTP: ~315 (but might have gone up slightly recently)

I've never done max tests of any duration under 20 mins either.

  • 2s: 1700w*
    5s: 1125w
    30s: 625w
    1min: 480w
    2min: 380w
    5min: 350w
    20min: 292w
    90min: 250w

    FTP = 280w

I've been specifically working on my 2 - 20 min Power this year. I used to have a decent 2 - 20 second Power, and a solid 2 hour + Power, and feck all inbetween. My profile looked like a ski jump With the final ramp flattened.

(* I'm that dickhead that sprints at the end of his sportives)

  • 5 sec: 950W
    30s: 459W
    1m: 425W
    2m: 388W
    5m: 326W
    10m: 302W
    20m: 295W
    60m: 261W

My FTP is still set as 283W in Training Peaks, from a 20 minute test I did on the track in January. Recent data suggests that may be a tad optimistic.

  • That's mental power. You're not that heavy either.

Thanks for the info on the TR plan.

Was going to go for an outdoor spin after work but think i'm going to sacrifice enjoyment for a more focussed indoor session given i'm still nursing a few twinges and grumbles. Joy.

  • Apparently I had a chunk more short term power last year. Probably cos I used a PM on a normal bike rather than a contorted TT position.

    5sec: 1,014
    30s: 610
    1min: 444
    5 min: 363

  • You're not that heavy either.

Fuck. I was hoping he was a 100kg monster

  • My FTP is also optimistic (as can be seen from my 20min Power for this year). I cant face reducing it.

  • That's my job.

  • I feel there is too much focus on Power to weight. What about Power to leg length. I'm trying to keep up, With half the fecking leg length, compared to the local Nordic giants.

    Good for drafting I Guess.

  • Mine's well down on last year because I've had too much lolz and not enough training hurtz.

    I am not sad.

  • 0:05 - 1,266
    0:30 - 628
    1:00 - 458
    5:00 - 320
    10:00 - 306
    20:00 - 288
    1:00:00 - 273

I guess that 273 would be my FTP, although that's from rides, rather than timed efforts. It feels like it would be a scootch higher if I smashed out a 1 hour effort.

Even the 20min is from 2 x 20, as opposed to a 20 minute FTP test.

tl;dr I don't know my FTP, but I seem to be at the right power for 2 x 20s.
