• I ate nutella on toast this morning. It wasn't cooked by a cyclist.

  • Why? Easy to keep consistent high power down at lower cadence, and allows you to bring more upper body into play. You try producing 700w+ for 60s at 110rpm+....

  • My FTP is low. I am weak.

  • Genuine question, but if that were true, then why isn't everyone riding at lower cadences if its easier to hold higher power outputs?

  • Depends on the situation. TT or turbo - no issue. Road race - try jumping when there's an attack while pushing 60rpm - it doesn't work.

  • Optimum cadence is hugely individual and there's loads of factors that affect it. Optimum cadence for max power for a flying 200 isn't the same as a 100mile TT.

  • Exactly. Its also an unusual type of effort - not one you would ever reproduce in a race (maybe he could average 700w+ for a minute but it would be all peaks and troughs).

People don't grind away because it fatigues your legs if you have to repeatedly jump on a big gear.

  • I don't think I could do it at any RPM tbh but I was under the impression that it is easier to hold higher watts at higher RPM (to a point obviously).

  • Entirely dependent on the interval duration. Try and hold your ftp for at 110rpm, then try 90rpm.

  • Fucking hell. Pedalling 101.

    Carry on.

  • Actually I'm contemplating Stages (5800 when it arrives) because;

    a/ it's cheap
    b/ it's easy to fit

I'm after a PM that's reliable and easy to live with. TrainingPeaks has slowly sucked me in over the last couple of years using HRTSS plus I'd like some data on 25m TTs.

Is battery life dreadful? Coin cells are a PITA.

  • I'm after a PM that's reliable

    orly?

  • Yes. Mine gets through a battery a day, which I can push out to 4-5 days by taking the NDS crank off the bike and leaving it in the airing cupboard for a week or so. It's cheap, and it's easy to fit, but it's pretty easy to sellotape a slim matchbox to the side of your crank, and for most purposes that'll be about as functional as a Stages power meter. It'll be lighter too.

  • Hahaha.

    OK.

Is there such thing as a sub £600, reliable PM yet?

Powertaps aren't cheap once you've built one for training and one for racing...

  • ...or you settle for a less than ideal wheel.

  • indeed - just get a power2max:

    http://www.power2max.de/europe/en/Produkt/bestsellers/power2max-fsa-gossamer-road/

Is £500 at the current exchange rate.

  • You contemplate buying a powermeter that's been pretty roundly shitcanned and then counter that with 'less than ideal wheel' presumably having a go at the well established and actually effective Powertap hub option? Erm... the matchbox option is sounding like your best bet. Cost effective and you can run any wheel you like..

  • I did see that but thought it was no use with a BSA threaded bb shell. On second glance it should be OK. Thanks.

  • Yadda yadda. I may run gatorskins too!

  • Havent all the battery issues resolved with the latest firmware?

  • Just make sure your number is clearly visible on your bars so you can buy your photos..

  • Oof. Low blow.
