Are they still only available from the manufacturer or are some local peeps selling them yet?

Their site mentions dealers, but I'm basing this on going direct.

I admit I am tempted to try it for the Serotta, as I want to keep the Ultegra cranks and this seems the most straightforward option, but I'd also like to wait for the #2 version.

I'd count the second (temp correction) version of the (now) classic as iteration #2.

Tune Smart Foot
TA Carmina or Vega
If you currently have another crank you need both the power meter and a crank.

All of those cranks have a different spider mount and P2M make a power meter for all of them.
