• No, he doesn't. Because I said you can use a figure between NP and AP to get a rough idea of your FTP. But the figure you use will depend on the persons characteristics. You can't used NP as FTP or the same % of NP, however you can use a % relative to the person.

I can blow NP away. But some people can't get NP much above their AP.

But in the end. Threshold is what you can average for ~ 1hour, as Neil said. And nothing else. Everything else is an approximation. That can get you close enough.

  • Anecdotally. My best NP from a crit. And crystal palace at that, a known NP busting circuit. Was about 40watts above what I could ride at threshold at that point. Because I can smash NP due to my characteristics.

  • @Dammit

@Greenbank took a 20 mins from within a short ride. But I see your point.

The other side being that you can't expect to hold you FTP for an hour in the middle of a longer ride - if you can, then it's not your FTP.

...unless your riding outside the hour was easy. Which is important, it makes it a practical way to test yourself on the road.

  • How well does garmin 'learn' your FTP? When I use '% of FTP' field do I have to manually update the FTP every time I do test or does it adapt?

  • You have to put in your FTP figure. In the box, where it says FTP ;)

  • I'm recovered from TT efforts within a couple of mins, less from a 25. The legs always hurt riding home but according to @Dammit this should be impossible so I can't complain. Fast road riding gets me in a worse mess.

  • Maybe you are made from magnets?

  • Not trying hard enough ;)

  • I wasn't going to be so impolite as to suggest that.

In other news, my SRM is all packaged up, ready to come to the US with me.

SRM.de did get back to me - it took 29 days from my sending them an email to them responding to it.

Still, at least they responded, even though they were no help when they did.

I gave in and called Paligap about the Powertap, they said "ah, yeah, can see your wheel - I'll get to it on Monday".

So at least they have it.

Can Training Peaks use HR-TSS or should I take the Powercal with me (which will do the same thing, essentially)?

  • You can mix HRTSS/TSS seemlessly in TP.

Maybe you are made from magnets?

    Fridge poetry?

The shorter the effort the longer the recovery. Hillclimbs = near death experiences.

  • "Before there were power meters, the easiest way to tell if I'd returned to normalcy was the gears on my crank set."

  • I do 2 x 20mins a lot. Gives a decent FTP from 0.95 x average power.

Things may change as it gets colder. But I've been using 280w indoors, and 295w out. I cook on the turbo and just cant produce.

Thing is I did a PB on my 20min climb yesterday. But I was riding the fixed gear without power. Cant believe I may hae cracked 300 whithout knowing :(

  • Probably just cos of driveline losses on a geared bike ;)

Look out for a cheap PowerTap Track hub. Some people here got them for <£300.

I'm doing some 5 x 5 at the moment (moving up 10W this week), not looking forward to doing 2 x 20 when I add a Thursday lunchtime session.

  • Trouble is I do these Climbs 41:26. Swapping from 48:16 at the foot of the Climb (same Chain length). So I'd need to get around that.

The sensible answer is not do these Climbs fixed, and rebuild the fixed With Power for flatter rides.

I do like climbing fixed though.

  • So overall, the reception of P2M is good?

  • Yep + choice of your 24mm axle cranks (controversial cc @Howard )

  • I know some massive WACs on here.....

  • Interesting.

  • ready to come to the US with me.

    You taking orders?

  • I resemble that remark

  • I'm going to Americaland soon - is stuff still cheap over there? Should I come back with a suitcase full of Powertaps?
