• Didn't cadence drills go out with 1000k weeks?

Not with my coach no, although thankfully he's not asking me to do 1000k weeks

  • Any one-legged drills? :)

  • no, but I have to clap my hands above my head in time to my cadence, very hard over 100 rpm

  • Do it on the turbo and try a nice soundtrack. I find that helps with my clapping drills.

  • Looking at buying one to cut grass with.

    I know.

    Electric or petrol?

  • Thinking of getting a Bosch battery powered mower. Dragging an extension lead around is super annoying.

  • Petrol. It's for our allotment.

  • My father-in-law has a little petrol mower you sit on, at his small holding.

Brings out the inner child big time.

Could do with a roll cage though.

  • Need a cyclocross version.

    Next Stages development, their own head unit;

  • We get it Bradley, you're a mod and you're British.

  • just a garmin with stages branding no?

  • These Belgian mods, coming over here, stealing our Tours.

  • just a garmin with stages branding no?

  • Ok, so I think i went off a bit easy on that, but hopefully that leaves room for improvement without actually having to do any training but the numbers are as below - please don't laugh!

    Time 40 Minutes
    Avg Power 224watts, ,
    Pwr/Weight 3.04w/kg,
    Calories 658kcal,
    Avg Cadence 96,
    Avg HR155bpm,
    Spd avg 38.5kmh,
    Distance 25.65km,
    Force L/R 52/48,
    Pwr Pk 462w

I think the heart rate being 80% of Max heart Rate suggests I didn't go hard enough from the start, but it's a benchmark and untill I convince myself that just riding, running and swimming more isn't making massive improvements then I'll rely on the Wattbike and just do tests every few weeks, trying to keep other conditions as similar as possible...

  • A power /kg over 3 is nice. Bit of an ambition of mine. Maybe if I cut off an arm.

  • My legs produce >3W/kg, they're just handicapped by having to carry the rest of my body with them

  • You really think Sky's budget doesn't extend to 'power meters for everyone!'?

It will extend even further now that Stages are paying them to use their inferior product, rather than Sky paying SRM.

  • 80% max HR for 40mins sounds low though. Just getting your head around suffering on a stationary bike for so long can add a load of watts. Then theres pacing. The first 2 or 3 FTP improvements are basically free.

  • Was this a 40 minute threshold test or a 40 minute ramp?

  • supposedly threshold, it did up the intensity as I went through as soon as I worked out that what I was doing was sustainable, so I would expect it to be higher if I did the test again, as I'd start a bit harder.

Regarding 80% max HR, I agree I could have gone harder, but bear in mind I'm pretty fatigued, as I've already done a tempo run today, with Hill intervals last night, Swimming training on Monday, a half marathon on Sunday and 60 miles of cycling on Saturday, so getting my heart rate much higher than that is very difficult!

  • You want to be nice and fresh for a FTP. Dunno about 40mins. But for 20mins my suffer level is basically 'I really really want to stop, but I dont *need *to stop'. Did one after a few sleepless nights (one of the kids was ill). Never even made the 20mins.

Its a good idea to have a slight ramp even ifit is a sustained effort.

  • I guess it's always different for people. I have always done a 20 minute test, I have also found if I am doing it with my coach I get a better result with some 'gentle' encouragement than I do when I do them on my own. If I'm doing one on my own I prefer to do a club ten as you can get more out on the road.

Has their accuracy been bought into question?

  • You should be fresh for the tests Ed. Schedule them for after rest week.
