We did it with toilet roll tubes and split peas. Less violent I guess.

*When we were really young we used darts.Compasses were also good (the ones for drawing circles not the direction finders. They wouldn't stick into the wooden classroom floor)
Candles and spray cans were good for making flame throwers.

Mate of mine had a deodorant can implode while he was flame throwing in the gym changing room at school. It closed around his thumb and really hurt. Heat + pressure = a trip to the nurse.
