  • WI ENO. Seriously pricey, but will outlast the wheel it's put on - almost certainly.

  • or get a freehubs body to run singlespeed with spacers given the cost of the WI (thought they are awesome).

  • My Halo Clickster is going nicely if you can't quite face £75

    They look pretty radical!

I'm spaced for single speed (on a pompino) so sadly not an option. Would make wheel selection much easier.

Thanks for the heads up! I had seen those on bikemonger

You break your wheels quicker than you wear your sprockets?

  • Rim wear?

  • Shop around for a secondhand wi.. £30-£50 dependent on condition ?

  • Rim wear indeed. Especially on a cross bike. I FUBAR'd the front rim on an old bike using it for FGCX with only front brake.

  • Extreme!

    :-)

  • Bite the bullet and go WI, excellent quality, running one for about 2 years in all weathers, only just got the slightest bit of play in the bearing, which are easily replaced. The initial cost is not an issue as they last so fookin long. Will never buy anything other than WI from now on.

You can get 120mm spaced singlespeed freehubs.

  • a couple from Bespoked:

    Wold Cycles disc sscx

    14bikeco sscx

(couldn't get a full side shot of that one...)

  • Around 6kg I'd imagine

  • Got the tricross. Looks like an old man bike, gear is way too spinny. Think it's 42-18 which for mainly road riding is too slow for me. Also rode with freewheel and didn't like it after riding fixed only for a year or so. Probably gonna get a 16t cog or something. And a new chain ring if I have to.

  • Thats the trade off . Run mine 38x20 and is way too spinny for road stuff but perfect for riding 'cross . And get rid of those ugly levers .....got potential even if I do prefer the green one . Was it expensive ?

  • You have to find a good compromise gear for off road and a good compromise gear for on road but finding one compromise gear for both on and off road is taking it too far and you have to give up something.
I lean on the off road side and give up on road speed because using a 70" gear off road takes the fun out of off road. Also make sure I choose off road routes as much as possible as riding the road sections can become a chore on a 60" gear.

  • I'm gonna go for a road gear as that's what I'll use it for most. As long as I can take it off road a little if I need. Something like 46-16 I think
Is there any consensus on spds that can be used in regular shoes?
I looked at the Shimano ones that are SPD one side and flat the other but they look a bit bulky.
Any thoughts on time atac dh4?

I ride with XT SPD's with the clip in flat plastic platform one side , beauty of which is you can take off when you dont want to ride in normal shoes .

  • Where did you get those from? I only saw one set and they were as expensive as the pedals themselves!

I get them from my mate who owns two bike shops , for free ! Basically if a bike comes in with SPD's on they come on as standard " safety equipment " like reflectors etc . First thing they do is take them off . I am sure I have a spare pair you can have , will try and dig out if not will pop in and ask for a pair . They fit all shimano SPD's except XTR

  • They used to come with the pedals.

I have some for CB's Egg Beaters if you want.

  • Thanks guys! Well which should I go for? Egg beaters or M540?

  • Eggbeater 1 are the only ones in my price range really and the reviews are pretty bad. Think I may go with some kind of SPD or atac
