Removing decals from under lacquer

  • i stripped some deep v's b4 the snow hit us and they've stayed a dull silver, no major corrosion

  • how did you strip the coating? Paint stripper?

I got some crappy paint stripper in homebase. Its supposedly non-toxic. Its also fucking useless. Nitromors ftw from now on.

  • nitromors, apply really really thick

  • I've not seen it mentioned anywhere, so in case anyone wanted to know (might save another thread...) it is extremely easy to remove decals that are outside the clear coat by heating them with a hair dryer and then scraping them off with something blunt and plastic (I used a cateye light belt clip). It only took me about a cup of tea cooling time to do half my surly this afternoon. Looks much better for it too.

  • If I'm going to take a frame to Armourtex to get coated, do I need to remove the decals first or will the shot blast and heating remove them? Is there anything else I need to do to prepare a frame to get sprayed?

  • shot blasting will remove everything

  • Anyway to safely remove decals from carbon fibre parts?

  • I saw in this post on fgg that someone had managed to both remove decals nicely then reapplied them without damage. Anyone here managed to do that successfully? How?

(Yeah, I've written to the fgg poster as well)

  • I don't think they're the same stickers.. I just think she means she got ones that look the same back on.. I could be wrong but that's my assumption based on how clean the new stickers look and the fact she has custom "my chocolate fix" sticker.

  • i like to use a heat gun (like the sort you use for stripping wood) and finish off with pure alcohol and or nail polish remover to get any sticky residue off

  • is it just me or does that puch have a massively high bottom bracket? odd looking frame. huge clearances too, she should get some 27"s on that thing.

  • Recieved the response from the girl I mentioned 4 posts above. They are new stickers based on the same design, not reused stickers. Except the front badge where she was just very careful when peeling it off. Still, well done though.

  • I'm about to touch up a couple of scratches on my frame and need to get hold of some clear coat/clear lacquer to finish it off so it matches the rest of the frame. Spray or liquid?

Any one got a recommendation that have been successful with?

    Cheers,
    matt

  • I've used standard rattle can lacquer. Loads of brands used. Most work quite well.

  • I wanna strip my charge racer, would I use the same process?

The decals looks fused, into the chrome?

  • I'm pretty sure its just a few layers of clear cost. Chrome should be able to handle some low heat though. Try a hairdryer?

Thanks for that tip - it worked well on my Steamroller - now pure battleship grey and no bird shit but I want to remove the head badge now ...
    Any ideas ?

  • gently (!!) put a screwdriver behind the badge until the glue comes off

    Thanks Erik.
Will give it a go - any idea what the glue is because I'm going to have to get rid of that as well .

    Cheers

  • Anyone remove the decal from a Halo rim. Not a decal as such, looks more like it is painted/stencilled on somehow?

  • Right, i've read through this thread a few times, and no-one seems to have posted their results of stripping a Charge Plug's decals. I have the Chrome racer, and i've decided it's time for the decals to go.
Has anyone been successful in this? I'm going to give the hair-dryer technique a go, and then, if unsuccessful i'll try edscobles technique...
Ed, if you're reading this, did you put the paint-stripper just over the decals, or did you pretty much do the whole frame?

sorry to bring this back up, did you have any luck with getting of the racers decals?

Can anyone help Nam? I need to do the same as I have new chrome front forks on my Charge Plug Racer and want to strip the rest of the decals off as well.

    Awesome, cheers...

  • Has anyone had a frame powder coated with a chrome effect finish? I was thinking of this for an old frame but can only find info on it re motorbike parts etc.
