  • Zero rake it is, I'm wondering what the handling will be like, the trail is on the big side but I figure there are more factors to take into account.

  • As time has proven I lack the dedication to keep a thread going, but I might update it anyway. I've bought some aluminum
stock and a tube is being lathed as we speak, in the meantime I got the fork threaded, however the bike shop made a mistake
and has cut the steerer one cm to short, so subsequently the headtube had to be quite heavily reamed, which side effect can be seen below:

    I think it's the tightest clearance on a 650/700 lopro I've seen.
Anyway, for a full shot with thrown together bits I've gathered so far:

Still need to get some parts, but the specs currently are:
Front wheel: FIR ea10 laced 0x to a low flanged campag record, tire - vredestein fortezza (It's been a pain in the ass to get a 650c gumwall clincher)
    headset: campag nuovo record
    stem: cinelli xa
    bars: cinelli LA84
    bottom bracket: campag veloce
    crankset: campag nuovo record (strada)
seatpost: thomson elite (black ano stripped and polished)
    saddle: selle italia turbomatic 2
rear wheel: 28h low flange campag pista laced to rim yet to be decided, I wrote hubjub if they could order a campag omega v rim, otherwise I guess I'll just be going for an archetype.

  • I like where this is going. Keep at it man, it will pay off!

  • ^^ pimp

  • Pleased to hear you haven't given up on this, i'm sure the effort will pay off when you finally get to ride it.

  • A corner turned? Good component choices. Toight.

  • only thing I'd object to is the Thomson, something period would be nice, otherwise it's excellent

  • Is that a crack in the headtube or just surface?
This is looking lovely, really hope it works out. The clearance at the front for a 650c is verging on absurd but still pretty cool.

God forbid, It's just a scratch (a rather deep one, for that matter) the fucker at the metal shop put there while removing the top tube stubs. The same shop is now latheing a internal cone for the tube for more than two weeks now, bearing in mind they initially told me it would be done in a day or two I'm growing rather impatient as I hoped to bond the frame this week before leaving town to visit my folks so it'd be fully cured once I'm back.

Well, yeah, I'm opting for a campag aero post, but 25.0 ones tend to be quite expensive once they turn up, so for the time being the thomson bought brand new for 8 quid will do. In general, putting together a full period correct group would be great, but won't happen anytime soon

I certainly hope so! Ha, didn't see this coming, did you?
    Thanks guys.
Anyway, I picked up some pedals yesterday, Suntour sprint, they add up to the incorectness of the build being japanese and all, but they do look very neat and faintly remind me of c-record track pedals.

  • Looking great so far , are you sticking with the purple ?
Where did you get a thomson for £8 ?

  • Thanks, I actually grew fond of the purple, the toptube's going to be silver, though.
I found the thomson in a local ad, the guy seems to have several of them, all 25.0mm though

  • Yea I really like the purple , I've seen a purple window tint similar to the virus purple , could look nice .
Anyway could link that add to me , have a weird size post that can be shimmed out with a 25.0 post
    Thanks

  • If you're getting a top tube done, I reckon you could try and finish it in purple without any risk by using vinyl. I once wrapped a bike in car vinyl wrap and it's surprisingly versatile and solid. With the added benefit that if you get a scratch you just replace that bit. If you're having the top tube in silver, raw metal or chrome, you could try and use transparent vinyl to keep some depth to the colour. Look at this, for instance.

The problem here is to get the closest match, and the colours are limited. But you can order the hot pink, for instance, try it out and if it doesn't work just take it off. It doesn't leave any traces, and the fact that it's a Vitus makes it piece of cake because it's just a straight tube, with no lugs or whatever.

  • Something like this, basically, but in the right colour if it can be found (another impossible quest for you).

    Hi,
here's the link, https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/113769716216634373482/albums/5716495869218253585/5761711406106082690 , it's on the short side though, measuring 16.5cm rails to end. Note that I'm not from the UK and neither is the seller, but if the post tickles your fancy I guess I could get in touch with the seller and hook you up with one.

As for wrapping the toptube in vinyl, thanks for the heads-up, but I doubt it's worth the trouble, I imagine the polished top tube is going to blend in nicely once I've slapped on some decals.

  • Where's this cheap Thomson place? I could do with a cheap silver 25.0mm one

  • Link is above, as for location, It's in Lithuania. However thomson doesn't make silver 25mm posts, you'd have to strip the ano by yourself.

  • Possibly a salvageable top-tube, although I feel bad suggesting it.

  • Dude just buy my vitus 979 road frame and change out the dropouts and be done with it :D

  • Thanks guys, but no puppy killing was nescessary. (a matching roadie would be a blast, Erik, can't justify one just now, though.;) )

Haven't bonded it yet, trying to think up a simple jig to hold the headtube laterally straight.

  • What is that bartape? Looks velvety, i need some

  • It's just a fabric ribbon I picked up at a textile shop to make my mind up regarding bartape color.

  • Oh my this is gonna be so nice!

  • Looks fine with the bare tt.

You're gonna need more links for the chain, and that rear lacing pattern looks fragile!

  • Just change that saddle
