  • Indra, there's feeling down and there's giving up all hope. Hang on in there.

  • Unfortunately (Fortunately I meant ) I don't see the republicans stealing this one - they showed their hand in 2000 and there are mechanisms set up to check the kind of widespread voter fraud that we saw then

  • ^^Bloody hell, you're not actually old enough to vote, are you?

  • Is there actually anyone (apart from 48% of the US) of the US, who actually want Romney in?

Everyone I've spoken to seems astounded he's even an option, and the media the same.

But may that's just a UK perspective, which is in general more left than the US.

It doesn't matter who gets in really, as underneath the spin and gloss the real business of keeping real politics ticking over will carry on regardless.

His link contains a truly staggering article, made more so by the certainty that no candidate would choose to do any different.

  • The presidency is based on electoral college votes so they only have to count up to 270. ~~ lazy~~undemocratic fuckers.

  • Whole cast of the expendables should do it.

  • Should have a clear idea when Ohio and Florida come in around midnight (maybe although that may be optimistic looking at the queues
'Bloody hell, you're not actually old enough to vote, are you - ' since I was 5 !

No lol I'm not, still interested though, it's important to everyone (y)

Reassuring if you are feeling anxious about the candidate whose holy book was dictated by an angel called Moroni !

  • No lol I'm not, still interested though, it's important to everyone (y)

That is very true. Enjoy it - hopefully you won't be left with such a gutwrenchingly depressing let down feeling as we had in 2004.

  • Wait so the actually winner is gonna be anounced tonight?
Sorry I'm a bit new to this.

    Depends.

In 2000 it took over a month, due to Florida being too close to call.

But in most elections it's clear earlier, as most states are clear wins for one of the parties, and only a few states actually make the difference.

The states have different amount of votes, depending on their size.

The ones predicted for Obama are worth 237 votes, the ones predicted for Romney are worth 191.

That leaves 110, and to win a candidate needs 270.

The key ones this time are (from East to West)

    New Hampshire (4)
    Virginia (13)
    North Carolina (15)
    Florida (29)
    Ohio (18)
    Wisconsin (10)
    Iowa(6)
    Colorado (9)
    Nevada (6)

We should effectively know the result when Florida and Ohio are called.

  • Ah ok which way do they tend to go?
I know North Carolina votes pretty right in general.

  • It doesn't matter who gets in really,
    [

People said that about Gore and George W. It's cobblers, just as it was cobblers when people were saying it didn't matter if Labour or Conservative won here.

  • Last time they all voted Obama, but that's fairly meaningless, especially Ohio and Florida switch a lot.

This time Florida and North Carolina seem to be leaning towards Romney. But that still wouldn't be enough. Unless he gets Ohio as well, as well as a few smaller ones, he's got no chance.

  • New York Times has 243 Obama and 206 Romney . Where did you get your figures from John ?

  • Twitter is making me angry whenever I see a Romney tweet and people genuinely blaming Obama for the state of the US economy and lack of jobs.

  • Sky says Obama's definites lie at 210 and Romney's are 191 and still says that without Virginia, Ohio, and Florida, Obama is still favourite and that it is 'easy' for Obama to win.

  • New York Times has 243 Obama and 206 Romney . Where did you get your figures from John ?

Looks like New York times have given NC to the Republicans, and Nevada to the Democrats, otherwise it's the same.

    Which are both likely.

I'm just basing it on a few different sources, just being a little less certain than the NY Times.

  • Ohio is the key I think - Romney can't do it without Ohio realistically although it is mathematically feasible. Florida could go either way but Virginia should be interesting as well. Romney will do very well to get Ohio especially as he is on record as saying that General Motors should be allowed to go bust.

  • Yes I can see N Carolina going republican . Yes NYT is probably on the optimistic side

  • Still 0-0

  • Interesting thing on BBC now about having legal right to vote if you are in line when the polls close - wasn't there something similar here during the last general election where they turned people away or did I imagine it ?

  • Twitter is making me angry whenever I see a Romney tweet and people genuinely blaming Obama for the state of the US economy and lack of jobs.

Same, I don't understand why they think concervative values will help them.

  • On another more serious tack either Emily Maitlis has developed bingo wings or I've got air bubbles in my contacts :)
