Heuvelmans CX rebuild

  • This is my slow burner rebuild...

I bought this CX bike complete off a friend for a good price. Apparently he bought it from here.

The frame is a Heuvelmans. Reynolds 531 decals on the fork blades, Campy drop outs, red sparkle paint. Mudguard eyelets, but not drilled for brakes, only canti bosses. Parts wise it was a complete mish-mash. The parts on it were Shimano 600 Arabesque drive side crank, Shimano chain rings, Dura Ace non-drive side crank, Shimano 600 Arabesque front derailleur, Campy Super Record rear derailleur, 3ttt bar and stem (the bars were about 37cm wide, the stem was super short), Shimano 600 Arabesque canti's, Tange headset, Suntour bar end shifters, (black) Dura Ace hubs laced to Mavic tubulars, Sugino seat post and some old Selle Italia saddle.

I pulled it apart and rebuilt it with a new set of bars, Cinelli stem, some secondhand Tektro levers, Kalloy seat post and a stripped Cinelli Unicanitor saddle. I also swapped the wheelset out to some Campagnolo Gamma with 700 x 32 Panaracer Pasela's. I used the rest of the parts listed above.

    This is the first build.

This rode okay, but then I started racing 'cross. I swapped some more parts out (cranks to newer Shimano 600, wheel set to 7 speed with CX tyres, rear derailleur) and raced in three races. It went suprisingly well, especially for a steel frame with 7 speed and bar end friction shifters. I loved the way the bike rode, but the outdated running gear started getting to me, especially in a racing situation.

    (please ignore Star Wars tattoo)

In my last race I snapped the front derailleur cable mid way through the first lap. I finished the race (just). When I got home, pulled the bike apart and decided to rebuild it with a complete modern groupset.

  • The first part of the rebuild was this:

    I also bought these:

I'm going to run SRAM Rival on it, and classic shaped bars look a bit shit with modern levers, plus don't sit as nice.

Other parts I have picked up.

I've also bought a black Tange headset.

  • Bar and stem test fit.

  • Damn, really like this!

  • Sweet. Will be following this. quite similiar to one of my projects.

  • I was wondering where that salsa stem was going :)

  • i like your rebel alliance tattoo :)

  • Found a pic of how it was set up when I bought it.

  • Also, that Colnago is NICE!

  • Love this allready!

This also needs it's own thread!

  • Bar end shifters with sram?? Or some brifters?

Also what's the clearance like? Room for 35+?

I'm going to run SRAM Rival brifters.

Not sure about clearance, I easily ran 33's knobblies on there when I raced though.

  • Bought a 28.6 to 31.8 shim for the front derailleur and a 22.2 to 25.4 shim for the front cable hanger.

This time around I'm running a clamp-on cable hanger on the stem, as opposed to the cable hanger being a threaded washer on the headset. Like this.

For the time being I'll be running the wheelset off of a Giant TCX, which I'm getting cheap enough from a friend. Hopefully I'll pick them up this weekend. I'm also getting some Avid Shorty brakes from him.

  • great project. looking forward to seeing the finished bike.

  • New (well secondhand) wheels!

Also got some Avid Shorty 6 canti's and a SRAM cassette from the same dude.

  • I just chucked stuff on to get a feel for it. Nothing is tightened and the headset and bottom bracket need to be installed.

  • Pretty big front ring for cx?

    Looks sweet though!

  • A smaller ring would be nice... but I raced a compact for ages and mostly used the little ring anyway sticking to the bottom of the cassette.
Really lovely looking build, hope this turns out well and should be a stunner!

  • Yeah, it's a road crankset. I'll be swapping the big chain ring out to something smaller before racing.

  • Having some issues with the canti's...

The Avid Shorty 6's dont sit properly againts the rim. I think it might be cause the canti posts are a narrower (closer to the rim) than modern posts. It was using Shimano 600 Arabesque canti's originally and they fitted fine.

Does anyone know of a similar, more modern, canti that looks and works like these? Tektro CR720 are a no-go. Too wide.

  • Picking up some Rival shifters this week.

    Stuff left to purchase:

    Chain
    Cables
Bar tape (probably going to try Lizard Skins)

Stuff that I need, but not straight away:

    Smaller big chainring for racing
Non-CX tyres for road riding (Thinking Nomad Resists or some more Panaracer Pasela's in 32)
    Black Canti's
    Black rear cable hanger

I'm going to try not to buy beer for the next two weeks, which will hopefully save me enough money to finish the bike.

  • I have an FSA 46 110bcd that I might be up for selling. Have you tried frogleg brakes?

I think my friend has a spare 46t chainring he wants to sell. He's also located in Adelaide,s o it's easier. Thanks though.

I'm looking at the TRP Eurox alloy brakes. Was looking at the Paul Components... but I don't have that sort of $$$ right now.
