At the cyclist / lorry safety event this morning the police gave out a summary of recent serious crashes.
... There were two cars parked opposite a central traffic island narrowing the single westbound lane. A skip lorry was in a line of slow moving traffic when the cyclist attempted to overtake on its nearside through the gap between the lorry and the parked car. As he neared the car door mirror he steers to avoid it and falls to his right, hitting the lorry before falling under it's rear wheels sustaining leg and pelvic injuries and internal bleeding. ...
I don't think this extract tells the whole story of what actually happened. -

Stating the obvious: this is not the thread for discussing safe / unsafe cycling.
(not in regards to the above, just trying to avoid what've happened before)

Horrible news but glad to hear the small positives that the rider is alive and without spinal damage.
My thoughts are with the rider, his family and friends. Stay strong all.

Hi guys and thank you again for your concern and wishes. The rider's condition is still considered very critical. He is facing major damages in various parts of his body (liver, kidneys, pelvic area, legs etc). The doctors are doing their best to keep him alive and we are all hoping for the best.

Stay strong mpanana and know that lots of people on here are holding your friend in their thoughts and wishing fervently for his recovery. Please do let us know if there's anything I can do to help - I live in the area so if you are looking for witnesses I'd be happy to help put up posters or talk to local shopkeepers or anything really. Just say the word!

I'm so sorry and sad to bear this news.
According to this blog maintained by his friends, http://forsofo.wordpress.com/, the cyclist knocked from his bike by a lorry on the Bethnal Green Road on October 29th has died from his injuries.
From Greece, Sofoklis K moved to London to pursue a career in dance and theatre and performed as part of the London 2012 festival and with the English National Ballet. His family will repatriate him to Greece for the funeral.
He becomes the 12th cyclist to die on London's roads so far in 2012. May he rest in peace.
This happened next to my house, to say I'm sad, shaken and angry is an understatement. My heart and prayers go to his friends and to his family. Can someone help me change the name of the thread to reflect that he died, I don't know how to do it please?

After a week of struggle and Multilayer surgeries Sophocles left last night. A complication worsened the situation of the last 24 hours and the battle ended. On Monday, his sisters and his cousin wanted to move the text you see below. On this day we all expect, including doctors, stabilize and improve the situation.
"Thank you all. Doctors and nurses in operating theaters and intensive doing our best. "All who live or pass us by visiting the hospital and all those who express an interest in every way. Your partner, your positive mood, faith, your wishes and your prayers, your support, give strength to Sophocles to us. "
In the coming days will be moved to Greece where he will announce more about his funeral.
The sadness is not described, not written, not transferred. Impossible to believe, unable to think of our lives without Sophocles. All these days the family and friends of aisiodoxousame to wake up to tell him what he has done, to read what they write friends and relatives all these days. I hope I left knowing how many and how much you loved him. I hope you left this quiet life.
Not written eulogy for buddy. Impossible.
See you my dear friend, when to talk.

Hi guys and thank you Mark for the udate. The original text in English (since google translate doesnt make sense)
'After a week of many long surgeries and fighting for his life, Sofoklis left us yesterday evening. A complication worsened his condition the last 24 hours and the fight was lost.
On Monday, his sisters and cousin wanted to upload the following post. This was the day we were all waiting for, including the doctors; for his condition to be stable and improved.
“We would like to thank you all. The doctors and nurses in the O.R. and the Intensive Care Unit that are giving their best effort. Everybody that has come by or is staying with us during the visiting hours and everybody who’s expressing their interest and care in any way possible. Your companion, your positive thinking, your faith, your wishes and prayers and your support give strength to Sofoklis and us.”
During the next few days he will be transfered to Greece and we will then announce more details about his funeral.
The grief we’re feeling cannot be described, written or transfered. We still can’t believe what happened. We still can’t think of our lives without Sofoklis in it. During these days we, his family and friends, were all optimistic that he would wake up so we could tell him what happened and show him the many messages of love and support written by his friends and relatives. I hope he left knowing by how many people and how much he was loved. I hope he left this life in serenity and peace.
You can’t write a eulogy for your best friend. I just can’t.
See you when I see you my beloved friend.'
Thank you all for your wishes and support this very difficult week. Ride safely.

R.I.P
As always, not a pleasant thing turning the logo to black. Somehow worse after such a fight too.
Dear All, I am one the rider's friends. A small update on his condition: He was supposed to undergo a third surgery this morning so as to stabilize his pelvis, however a complication in the femoral artery (earlier this morning) has paused the programmed surgery. We will have more news regarding the complication in about an hour from now. As Danny has already said the greatest damage appears in his pelvic area, left leg, bladder and bile and his condition remains critical. Anyone who could help us finding more on the conditions in which the accident occured, please contact me here or via email at mariannaroumel@gmail.com. We are also creating a blog so as to gather information but I ll tell you more later.Thank you all for the support you have shown. I will keep you updated on his condition.
