You might not be saying that after 350 km in two days!
Also I am certainly doing this geared. I say this having just invested in said gears.

I have to get on this. Looks to be a brilliant adventure

We need four riders. Who can confirm availability for the dates in question and genuinely thinks they can make it to Iceland (and genuinely has the balls to do this)?
Also we need one or two cross bikes or MTBs in addition to road bikes.
Time to start whittling, I guess.
Kind-of probably definitely riding:
- jadias (C)
- richoking
- upstart (C)
- eyebrows
- Earthloop
- erikjonsson
Kind-of probably definitely driving and massaging:
- Mrs Earthloop
- Anica (jadias' friend)
- jadias (C)

I can do those dates and am up for it. Have gears, but only roadie gears - can't help on the CX / MTB front

(CX) - Confirmed w/ CX
(MTB) - Confirmed w/ MTBI'm going to try to clarify exactly what is allowed in terms of bikes. The site shows a guy on a TT type setup but last year everyone seemed to be on road bikes. Clip-on aeros might be great if they're allowed.

Admittedly for four wheels rather than two, but worth a watch. I've driven from Reykjavik up to Akureryri it would be amazing on a bike, passed quite a few doing route one. Had I more time/money/youth/courage/ability would definitely be signing up, wonderful country

totally unable to do the fancy quoting stuff you guys do, but you can put a C by me and the mr ... we have the dates free and think this is an incredible cool way to spend a bit of time

I think it'll be relatively flat. There are definitely hills but from what I've driven (the southern section from Reykjavik as far as the glacial lagoon at Jokulsarlon, north from Reykjavik to Snaefellsnes) I don't remember any of them being particularly monstrous.
I've just had a quick look at the elevation profile of the A1 loop on bikehike: it averages about 15m of climb per km, which is about 50% more hill than laps of Richmond Park.

Registration is now open for this. Fee is EUR 310 per team (65 quid per rider).
So, let's see if we can sort out a proper team. Who's still in? richoking, upstart, Earthloop?
-
• #64
hey folks.
a couple of questions before I've even gone on the site. Are we riding together as a team? Are we really aiming for 830 miles in two days?
-
• #65
It's a relay: one of us rides while the others sleep in a van
-
• #66
I'm still available and willing, but concerned that I'm not fast enough for a team that's planning to average 30 km/h.
I think the Box Hill 15k Olympic lap is about the same ratio of climb to distance as the lap of Iceland, and my best time around that is 35 mins something. Although I've only been round it fixed so far (I've recently bought a bike with gears, but I'm waiting for dry weather to take it out, with very little success so far) so I may improve on that a bit.
-
• #67
If somebody faster than me is interested but can't fully commit yet then I can be a standby: should you want to drop out I'll be available to pay you back whatever fees you've paid so far and take your place.
-
• #68
Definitely doable on my end. I guess we could do a few rides together before that and gauge efforts and plan accordingly
-
• #69
Don't worry about the average speed stuff - I'm in it mainly for the experience. Yes it's a race, but it seems to be a rather loose one. You get to ride around Iceland! That's winning enough, I reckon. Not that I won't try, but I wouldn't get too worried about performance.
I probably can't do the group rides (I am planning on visiting folks in the UK, but probably afterwards... but we'll see) but you guys can go ahead. You'll just have to trust that I'm not a serial rapist, I guess.

Still keen - let me make sure the dates are still good
-

If I wasn't doing the styrkeproven the same weekend I would've loved to do this, sounds like great fun.
Good luck, and I'll be up for 2014 if any of you still want to ride bikes after finishing this. -
• #72
I'm going to have to rule myself out of this one, sorry guys. The money I had for gears and slightly extravagant Iceland trip has been earmarked for a deposit on a flat. I'm gutted but will spend my spare time training for a marathon instead (cheaper) and will follow this thread closely. Might also get involved in some practice rides if/when they happen.

As I see it (and I'm sure Jadias will correct me if wrong) there are two types of 'in' here:
Group goes only with sponsorship: Join this list only if you're willing to stump up £65 now and lose that £65 (it will become a donation to an Icelandic children's charity, in effect) if no sponsor for van and accommodation can be found.
- Earthloop
Group goes no matter what: Join this list only if you're willing to stump up £65 now and pay your share of the full costs if no sponsor can be found.
- Earthloop
As soon as either list gets 4 names, we can go ahead and register.
- Earthloop

Yep, pretty much. For what it's worth I'm fairly sure I can at least get one sponsor to cover van and accomodation costs, but don't bet on it.
I'm in either way, anyway. The flight from Japan to Iceland is a bigger problem for me!
