  • Just checked and realised the Saf in shoreditch has closed :(

Well that sucks, wasn't that the original one?

  • yeah i remember that. The world food Cafe have two veggie books that are also quite good but for a more global palette.

Yottam Ottelenghi's 'plenty' has lots of veggie dishes too but I find he uses some ridiculous ingredients. Can anyone well me that've legitimately used Sumak in a dish? No?

He sounds (of) Turkish (origin), so I wouldn't have thought Sumac was a bizarre ingredient at all.

In respect of Vegan food I'm usually turned off by the typical choices at local vegan eateries - meat analogues like fake bacon or a giant mushroom in a roll masquerading as a burger. Utterly rank. Give me an Indian lentil or pulse daal, or a veggie curry, or italian style vegetable stew any day.

I say that as a meat eater though so maybe I'm way off.

  • If anyone is heading North, my friend cooks in a vegan restuarant in Glasgow. They've just started a food blog:

    It's seriously good there!

Yeah I think (as a vegan) I want fairly novel stuff that I can't make for a few quid at home. Fake meat can be OK but tofu is far superior, if people just know how to use it.

  • Cheeze. Why?

  • Please post good animal-free food finds below! I'm in a mission to eat less meat, fish & dairy so I thought I'd start a thread.

    Ta.

This is why I love this forum!

My GF is a vegetarian and I really love food, and tbh eating out is usually a mission. We just got back from Portugal, and it was hell. A million awesome cheap little eateries for me with fresh fish etc. and nada for her.

Anyway I'm trying to find somewhere to go for dinner for her birthday. Any tips on suitably nice, interesting places?

She likes all the various eastern foods as they know how to cook properly with tofu etc. so I'm open to it, just not sure if those authentic places will feel very special.

    Cheers.

    Foam>>>>>>>>>>>

Foam is awesome when done well.

  • Here's a michelin place:

    http://www.vanillablack.co.uk/

I found it a bit poncy, but I find anything that doesn't do pizza or curry poncy. The menu's a bit of a daft Hester wannabe confection - the lettuce foam soup was possibly the worst thing I ever tasted.

Anyone else eaten here? The menu looks fairly good to me.

  • Just thought I'd pass this on as my colleague recommended the non-veggie menu at the Ledbury and the tasting menu looked really interesting.

The only down side is the cost of the wine probably pushes out of my reach :(

  • My other half took me to Vanilla Black for my birthday lunch. I'm vegetarian and she eats meat.

It was very good, the service was also good, not too intrusive. We both loved the food however it was quite rich. A lot of the dishes contain dairy so the choice will be smaller for vegans. I would definitely go back, it was not too pricey.

I'd agree - went there and liked it. It was quite dairy heavy but nice none the less. The meat eater with me enjoyed it.

That said a colleague went at about the same time and really didn't get on with it. She found it a bit cold and sterile and the atmosphere wasn't really to her liking.

One thing we did agree on was Alyn Williams at the Westbury. We both went before he got his Michelin star and it was excellent. Veggie food was amazing, great service and the dining room looks brilliant.

  • ^Thanks for the tip. The vegetarian tasting menu for Alyn Williams at the Westbury looks epic, and they have the option of matched beers!

  • This also looked nice.

  • ...and cheers for the info on Vanilla Black.

  • BTW if anyone knows of any good veggie places in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka please do tell... the mrs. is worried!

Eating veggie in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka is tricky but doable. I spent three weeks there and didnt die and Im vegan. I basically just used happy cow to look places up and see which were closest to where Id be rather than aiming for specific places most of the time.

Theres quite a few places in Tokyo but these are the ones that I really enjoyed:
Loving Hut - Amazing food, super cheap but very odd opening hours and quite out of the way
Pure Cafe - Lunch deals are great value for money but the rest of the food is pretty $$$. Still the food there is awesome so its definitely worth going at least once.
Brown Rice - I never actually went to this one but it was highly recommended by another vegan friend of mine.
Freshness burger and Mos burger both do pretty tasty veggie burgers and they are literally everywhere. The fast food joints in Japan are on a whole nother level to the UK so dont be put off by the fact that they are just burger chains.

For some reason I cant remember where I ate in Osaka, which is odd cos I spent well over a week there.

Kyoto I just day tripped from Osaka so again not much help there but I had planned to go to Proverbs but unfortunately after trekking all the way out there it was closed for some sort of staff training.

As a whole though, if you get stuck there are heaps of indian places so you can nearly always find curry. Another good tip is 7-11/lawson/familimart/ etc etc etc all sell plain riceballs so if you need a quick snack thats a good bet. The plain ones are the best bet cos the other ones can be filled with virtually anything you can imagine and then some.

In short happy cow is your friend

  • (Japan)
Mominoki House. Not sure where it is now tho!
    Really good.

My gf really didn't have any issues when we were there finding food

  • Ah, nice thread, Ben.

    Vegan Peasant
Do pop-ups and markets (I think Columbia Road) and the odd special event.
If you get a chance to try it, their stuff is amazing.
Oh, and they're very lovely people too....

They have done Chatsworth Road Market many times. I haven't made it down for a few weeks and don't know if they have recently. Adrian's a wonderful chef and makes gorgeous stuff. Their Persian 'hidden dinner' a while ago was one of the best meals I've ever had. I've recommended them many times before, so here's another time.

  • Can anyone well me that've legitimately used Sumak in a dish? No?

    I have, many times.

One of the discoveries I find people who vegan/vegetarian make is just how much variety there is of herbs, spices, vegetables (land and sea), fruit, or mushrooms that on a meat-heavy diet they'd never become aware of. If you just look at the standard ingredients in Japanese cooking, as a random example, a huge percentage of them are things that are completely unknown to most people in the west.

  • Animal friendly shampoo, conditioner, lotion and deodorant please.

  • Check out the Little Book of Cruelty-free:

    http://www.gocrueltyfree.org/consumer/get-involved/lbcf-request

All in there, the most comprehensive listing you can get.

  • I miss vita organics :(

  • Thanks Oli, especially coming from a man with such a lush mane.

Whoa wait, why do I have to give all my personal details just so I can do the right things?

  • Apparently so--they used to have it for free download. I was surprised, too.

  • Today I had the most excellent chana, pea and potato stuffed roti from Bajan Spice in Nunhead. I'm hooked on veggie rotis. I'm really interested in searching out good veggie options from non-veggie places - look how great turkish mezze are, and mostly vegan.

Fuck death, I want more plants.

Made a hot roast squash chutney without any refined sugar today, with about 30 ingredients (the exciting new ones today were date syrup and lovage seed) and suddenly realised I'd put a teeny tiny drop of honey on the squash during roasting, and now can't give any to most vegans.

  • ^ the 2 sisters tandoori on Gibbon Road is really good for a take-away too, I'll have to check out Bajan Spice now!

  • not one for the health conscious, but i just heard about this place:
