I'm guessing that the aim of this is to demonstrate to those who normally drive to work that their life could be worse if those who commuted by other means chose to use cars instead?
If so then I suspect that it's main success will be in preaching to the choir, whilst making those that cycle just a bit more hated by those that drive.

I can't drive but will do my part by booking a driving lesson on this date.

David, as I will have nowhere to park when I get to work, do you mind if I get the missus to drop me off and drive the car back home?
-
• #33
Great plan Chris. Double the impact^
-
• #34
Um...nobody is actually going to drive are they? And I think you'll find the guy threatening to drive dangerously was making a point rather than seriously planning to do so.
It's a clever stunt to draw attention to how ridiculous it would be if everyone did.
TBH traffic can't get much worse than it did during the tube strikes. -

Great idea David and i support it wholeheartedly, but
who's that idiot?
i'll be unfortunately on a bike as i don't have a driving licence and don't want to be knocked down by this cretin
if someone knows him, please pass the message
I think you missed the ironic post

I'd suggest totting up the costs for driving in (petrol, VED, congestion charge, parking etc) and then donating it to some worthy cause rather than pissing people off on their way to work just to feel smug about your commuting choices.
-
• #37
To me it's not about smugness, it's about how people in cars feel and act towards people on bikes. Despite the huge changes in London, a bicycle rider's place on the road is still being negotiated and there are still drivers who act as if people on bikes have no place.
This action may help car drivers appreciate how good it is for them to have many people on bikes and that it is important to make roads welcoming by giving space to cyclists and being patient and not intimidating anyone on a bike.
I hope later during the lead up to LDtW day to be able to get this point across.

I'm confused; is this what cyclists or motorists do?
"Getting into the spirit, cyclist Dave Rabin said that he is "going to drive really aggressively, do u-turns wherever I like, pull in without indicating, drive with a 1/2 inch gap in front, cut in to queues right before a red light, and overtake without bothering to pull out at all... see how those taxi and van drivers like it"

what does mpg mean ? -
• #40
^ hire a tank! brilliant. Just imagine if every cyclist on LD2W day hired a tank
-

So, take the day off. Drive around and around west end, city, just having to pay £8 plus fuel (loads). Never stopping. What on earth should the massive signs on the car read?
AM I IN YOUR WAY? NORMALLY I CYCLE HERE
MY OTHER CAR IS A CYCLE
DRIVING YOU NUTS -

Nothing can be done to stop motorists hating us. Anything and everything that cyclists ever do will only serve to make motorists increasingly hate us more. And thus shall it be until the end of days...

what does mpg mean ?Miles per gallon.
Or in the case of a tank, that might only be metres! ;-)

we do need a flag or something to let people know that some drivers on the day are normally walkers/ cyclists/ bus riders.we do have a poster now thanks to zazcar
Which may be tweaked a little

Does she fancy coming via Camberwell to pick me up?
-

I hope people aren't forgetting the important issue of parking. Driving to work may make you feel glorious and righteous but don't miss the opportunity to add the icing to the LDtWD cake by parking in a wonderful place.
If you're unsure what a wonderful parking place looks like, ask your work colleagues for advice. Those that may have mocked you for walking or riding a "Victorian distraction" or those that are very precious about their parking space are bound to know the best spots.
If you don't have marked parking spaces to make use of and have to park on the road, don't miss the opportunity to admire the parked vehicle of someone else who has driven to work. Don't park to close though, you won't get the best effect. About 8-10 feet is the recommended distance. -

Making some assumptions:
- The goal of this protest is to make drivers of vehicles more aware of the moral superiority of cyclists, as cyclists generate less in the way of congestion than (larger) vehicles
- In order to do this a percentage of those that would normally cycle will use a larger vehicle to get to work and back, hopefully leading to a massive spike in congestion
- For the "normally motorised" to understand that they are being educated rather than simply delayed your major requirement is to get knowledge of LDtWD out there
- Therefore this is a communications project, and penetration into the normally motorised of the day is going to be the best metric to judge success
- Which would suggest that you need to promote this in places like Pistonheads, the Evening Standard etc, is this happening?
- Relying on "the choir" to spread the word is not going to work
- If it is only the converted who know whats going on, you have failed
- The goal of this protest is to make drivers of vehicles more aware of the moral superiority of cyclists, as cyclists generate less in the way of congestion than (larger) vehicles
Can non drivers contribute to rail/tube/bus congestion?
Also, should I commute from Manchester to Trafford via London that day?
